The Navy says U S submarines sank three Japanese destroyers off the Aleutians on July 4 and left a fourth burning fiercely after attacks at Kiska. Charleston July 6 report Drownings rose to nine in West Virginia over the Fourth of July weekend after two fishermen were drowned in Elk river near Precious. Donald G. British Roll Back Axis On Egypt Soil

British desert fighters attacked Axis forces in the El Alamein area and forced a retreat for the second day, reports say. Fourth of July holiday toll drops nationwide

Violent death over the two day Fourth of July weekend was the lowest in years with 317 lives lost, against 628 for the three day holiday last year. AP survey cites 159 traffic deaths, 83 drownings, 75 other causes. no fireworks casualties reported. Gasoline rationing on the Eastern seaboard and war plant activity helped reduce accidents.

Orville Kinsey Kills Family Then Takes Own Life

Orville L Kinsey 34 shot and killed his wife Sally 32 and daughter Sally Jo 11 in their Grafton West Washington Street home before taking his own life, leaving two notes including a will and a confession of poor health and fear of losing sight. Authorities found the bodies around 1 pm after neighbors alerted police. no inquest was held. Kinsey, once a Grafton High basketball star, worked at Home Laundry and later Hazel Atlas Glass, with motives tied to health and financial strain.
