The Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party re elected all 11 members of the outgoing Press. Follow ups note multiple items from Memphis to Tehran and domestic concerns across several states including Alabama and Virginia during the period.
West Side Juniors defeated West Side 30 10 to claim the Biddy League title as Grafton Junior High edged St Augustine 26 22 in the semifinals. Junior Cross led the champions with 16 points, while Billy Duffy and Mike Barlow led St Augustine with 10 and 6 respectively.
United Press reports seven West Virginians died over the weekend in traffic and train incidents. Two highway fatalities occurred in a two car collision near Morgantown. Albert Cataruzzi, 56, of Oceana was struck by a Virginia Railway train after sitting on tracks. An 18 month old Morgantown boy Danny Cullen died in a Route 73 crash. Victims in a second Route 73 crash near Morgantown were Betty Malone, 31, Fort Ashby, and Lloyd Johnson, 17. The crashed vehicle parents Joseph and Mrs Gullen were seriously injured.
Senator Harley M Kilgore a Democrat from West Virginia was hospitalized at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a mild stroke. Administrative assistant Harold C Miller said Kilgore went in for a physical and blood pressure tests last week and was also battling a bronchial infection. After a Saturday relapse the stroke was disclosed.
Forecaster warns a night of showers and likely thundershowers with cold, windy conditions. Temperatures ranged from 51 yesterday to 33 last night, with 55 current. Saturday saw 82 rainfall and a low of 45. A pre-dawn explosion wrecked a chemical laboratory at Cameron Iron Works in Houston.
Burglars cracked a Buffalo mill office safe over the weekend but failed to profit after investigators found the combination taped to the front of the safe. The thieves learned the hard way that the safe held no money.
UNITED PRESS reports the Veterans of Foreign Wars urged Congress to grant $100 monthly pensions for all World War I veterans with incomes, $2400 for single men and $3600 with dependents at age 62. Commander Timothy J. Murphy rejected government cost estimates of $1.9 billion extra in the first year.
Italian President Giovanni Gronchi arrived for a historic goodwill visit to the United States and Canada. He will visit six American cities and Ottawa, meeting President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles to press for stronger Atlantic alliance ties amid possible blunt criticisms.
Joseph R. Gyekis a Wheeling Post Office carrier was free on 500 bond awaiting federal court action on a mail theft charge. Postal Inspector K S Maynard said Gyekis was arrested Friday after allegedly opening a letter at the post office and 51 letters were later found in Gyekis locker.
The Senate began week two of debate on the Democratic farm bill amid hopes for a vote by week’s end. Weather damage from strong winds disrupted Grafton and nearby areas with downed power lines and damaged structures including a roof and speakers stand at Tygart Lake. Power crews worked late Saturday to restore lines and street lights remained out in several sections as lawmakers, led by Hubert Humphrey and Charles Potter, debated price supports and farm policy.
UN Command said it would not disclose any information turned over by the Communists on the fate of 2720 prisoners of war including 450 Americans. Officials noted 12 translators work to translate the reports from Korean to English. The list includes Air Force Captain James A. Van Fleet Jr. son of retired General James A. Van Fleet who led the wartime Eighth Army.

Air Force officials noted the coast to coast Republic jet flight covered the distance in about three hours and 34 minutes but will not be official. Lt. Col. Robert A. Scott of Des Moines Iowa and 1st Lt. Richard Hill TH of Bearsdale North Dakota piloted the jet bombers across the nation without refueling and added to the original supply.
A four engine aircraft struck a house about a mile south of Dayton today and burst into flames. The crash occurred in daylight and caused extensive damage to the structure. No further details on casualties or the occupants were immediately available.
