Subpoena for Paul Dillon in Capone gang parole case
Paul Dillon, a St. Louis attorney and former Truman campaign manager, was subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury probing paroles of four ex Capone associates. FBI served him in Newton, Massachusetts. Dillon said he aided parolees but did not bill. Charlotte Campagna claims he billed $10,000 and later killed her husband after he testified.

Operators talk new Lewis demand sparks miner talks
Washington February 27 soft coal mine owners sought an answer to John L Lewis pension demand today amid talk of a possible new contract crisis. Lewis head of the United Mine Workers proposed using the welfare and retirement fund to pay 100 dollars a month to miners 60 years old with 20 years in the pits. The fund grows from a ten cent a ton royalty under law. Operators insist the demand would need a larger contribution perhaps six and a half cents a ton. Lewis spoke to trustees. he is one trustee. Neutral member Thomas E Murray quit. Operators’ Ezra T Van Horn called the meeting of colleagues from a once national negotiating committee. The committee was abandoned after the government injunction action against Lewis strike of 1946. Van Horn would not reveal details but producers fear another shutdown this spring.

Carbon Monoxide Fumes Kill Several Coal Miners
In Pikeville Kentucky deadly carbon monoxide fumes from blasting killed four men at Elkhorn Coal Co. pit seven miles east of town. Mine owner Archie B Layne 30 and workers Raymond Goble 28 Gene Blackburn 24 and Junior Moles 24 all of Betsy Lane were found dead by a miner’s wife and another mother.
