A 26 year old North Main Street coal truck driver escaped injury as he faced a band of pickets. He armed with a shotgun drove off to his home, then stood off the crowd to keep them from raiding his vehicle. Officers pursued roving pickets and began tying them to a nonunion mine operation.
Manchester NH The foreman of the jury in Dr. Herman N. Sander case disclosed his wife Leona Cutter died of cancer last Palm Sunday. The family physician confirmed the statement as attorneys and reporters observed the jurors at the death scene of Abbie Borreto. Cutter's brother Dallas, a Hillsboro grocer, made the disclosure.
Taylor County Post No. 12 of the American Legion held its bi monthly meeting with Herbert Spencer presiding. Plans for a Legion birthday banquet in March were outlined, with J W Powell donating a deer for the dinner. Reservations will be taken, the public is invited, and a membership contest is under way with $50 dues urged for all eligible Legionnaires.
Mary Catherine Barlow 32 formerly of Grafton was nominated by President Truman to become a federal judge on the District of Columbia municipal bench. A daughter of late John H S Barlow Grafton attorney she has resided in Washington for 17 years and has served as legal assistant to ten federal municipal judges. Senate confirmation required.
Local churches plan World Day of Prayer events at First Baptist with an 11 a.m. service and a noon luncheon led by Andrews Methodist and the Salvation Army. Mrs. Melvin Mackey reviews the book Mary by Sholem Asch. An afternoon program features a solo by Mrs. Dorsey Trimble. A young people service follows tonight at 7:30 p.m. led by Mrs. Homer Beck.
West Virginia Commission on Interstate Cooperation begins a two day session in Charleston. chairman Carl M. Frasure of Morgantown says officials will review county finance reports and a uniform highway code plus a report on personal practices and procedures. The meeting runs today through tomorrow.
Charleston WV The Board of Control will open bids today for a Weston State Hospital building to house the criminally insane. The two story fireproof structure is projected to cost about 375000 and will provide accommodations for 121 persons. President Joe F Burdett outlined the plan. A hearing for Isaac Mayles Simpson Route 1 was postponed until 4 pm today by Magistrate John Snider after Mayles was arrested on a non support charge.
The state said today that Dr. Herman N. Sander admitted killing a 59 year old cancer patient with air injections and did so at the pleading of her husband to relieve her suffering. Attorney General William L. Phinney outlined the case to a 13 man jury in Manchester. Phinney quoted Sander as saying he knew he might have broken a law but that the law was not right and should be changed. He killed Mrs. Abbie Borotto in Hillsboro county hospital last December saying the pleadings of Mr. Borotto and his friendship prompted the act.
Washington reports say the Truman administration is strongly against seeking an atomic peace conference with the Soviet Union now. President Truman warned against easy solutions while urging hard buildup of free world strength in the fight against Communism. Rep. Durham of North Carolina condemned any conference, warning it could lead to despair and defeatism, contrasting with McMahon’s push for a $50 billion foreign aid program including benefits to Russia.
John L. Lewis raced to avert a multi million dollar fine as miners’ strike negotiations with coal operators stalled. Capitol talk of presidential seizure to force labor back to work looms while Judge Keech prepares a contempt hearing if the United Mine Workers fail to comply with back to work orders.
The West Virginia AFL Brotherhood committee challenged the Interstate Commerce Commission ICC over a January 4 order for a one third cut in coal fueled railroad passenger service. The dispute was raised in a letter to the State Public Service Commission noting coal shortages and mining curtailments.
J A Boender superintendent of Grafton National Cemetery will speak at the Lions Club dinner tonight at 6 15 PM at the West Main Street Methodist church. Boender came from Fort Smelling Minnesota and took over January 13 succeeding A C Gordon who moved to Hampton Virginia.

Hollywood reports Stromboli directed by Bergman and Rossellini grossed 1.248 million in 320 theaters on opening day, with first week projected near 2 million. Production cost was about 900 thousand. RKO notes profit figures unavailable.
Britons by the millions flocked to polls to decide whether to keep or dismiss the Labour government led by Prime Minister Attlee. Expected results tomorrow. turnout high across England Scotland and Wales as voters weigh continued welfare-state measures against Conservative proposals to halt nationalization. Some 34,410,306 qualified voters with about 26 million expected to vote for the 625 member House of Commons.
Washington officials report a final vote planned today on a Fair Employment Practices bill with limited enforcement. Southern opponents filibustered to hamper the measure, while supporters push for a five member federal commission to work with state and local agencies to curb discrimination. The session paused by a technicality, delaying the decision to the afternoon.
The CIO Communications Workers of America accepted a 60 day bargaining truce after President Beirne and President Truman urged service to remain uninterrupted. Beirne said the union would bargain daily to reach a peaceful settlement while wage and hour terms remain in effect. Some Bell system firms accepted. others were expected to.
Barbara Parks 46, widow of Robert Franklin Parks 38, a Bataan survivor, was released in $10,000 bail after four days in jail. Page County Commonwealth's Attorney filed murder charges following her statement that the husband's death was accidental during the shooting.
Charleston officers hoped for a continued lull in coal mine picketing in West Virginia. New developments included a northern panhandle canvass plan to solicit food clothing and money for diggers in dire need and a women’s auxiliary formation in Amigo Raleigh county to ensure miners won’t return without a contract. Officials reported little violence, with legal actions in two counties against 34 arrested in prior disturbances.
Washington reports indicate the United States plans a small emergency loan to Yugoslavia to ease economic distress from a Russian led trade boycott. Officials suggest a sum between 10 and 18 million dollars may be used for cotton, petroleum and other vital imports to avert unemployment in Yugoslav mills and preserve Tito as a bulwark against Moscow influence.
Taylor county citizens were urged to hasten contributions to the annual Heart drive in a plea by Herbert Spencer, commander of American Legion Post No. 12. All gifts, large or small, go to a worthwhile cause. larger contributions may be arranged with Mr Spencer at the Legion Home or his Lineville residence. Red plastic hearts in local businesses mark the drive, ending Monday February 27.
