President Truman pressed for a 14 month extension of rent control and continued housing aid. He proposed a long range program to build 1,000,000 dwellings yearly for ten years, pairing immediate relief with long term housing goals.
Irvin Marion Davis known as Joe, a former Baltimore and Ohio railroad conductor, aged 78, died at Myer’s Clinic hospital in Philippi at 1:25 this morning. A native of Taylor County, he lived at 520 Gay Street and was a St. Paul’s Methodist member. His wife Dorothy Hannigan had died just over two weeks earlier. He retired from railroading about 13 years ago.
Washington February 23 angry Republicans prepare hearings this week to question three steel executives representing big and little steel and independents. Taft predicts no circus as he warns that steel price hikes threaten cost of living and fuel labor demands, potentially denting GOP hopes on inflation.
New York report says a 60 year old man and his 27 year old son died after a midtown subway platform struggle. Police quoted the son Felix Lefkowsky saying I pushed my father he is no good when he fell he held out to me and I fell with him. The father Royal Lefkowsky died instantly and the son’s legs were mangled before death in hospital.
Seasonal warmth spread through most of the United States while Europe faced continued winter deaths. Subzero readings were confined to Car Bond Me, while Burlington Vermont and Binghamton New York reported eight and seven degrees respectively. Northern Montana expected colder weather to move in, potentially overspreading the northern midwest by Wednesday.
In Prague a Communist push for supreme power saw security police mobilized against government buildings and embassies. Non Communist ministers resigned from the Gottwald coalition, while police seized opponents and control of radio and press centers. Czech nationalism, interior police actions, and arrests marked a tense political crisis as the country faced a red-dominated power struggle.
In Washington on February 23 24 year old Hazel Woolfolk lay critical after a head and neck wound from a gun. Her husband L L Woolfolk a locomotive watchman was found dead along the Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac tracks. Police recovered a .32 caliber German automatic with three cartridges in the clip and one in the barrel. Alexandria coroner J A Simms doubted an autopsy.
County Agent Lloyd Reid announced that the dairy education meeting at Haymond School on Wednesday night has been postponed to March 3 at 7 30 p.m. due to a revival in the community. The first meeting will be held tonight at Janes Memorial chapel. Sponsored by the Taylor County Milk Production committee.
The City of Grafton seeks bids for two fire trucks a police cruiser a street maintainer an electric centrifugal pump water pipes and other items with bids due by March 23 at noon The city may reject all bids and will consider alternate police vehicles and cruiser conversion to a pickup for water department use.
Washington dispatch reports Southern governors warn of a rising armed mood as Truman civil rights plans loom. Dixie senators privately say insurrection could gain steam if Congress acts, else risk fading. they anticipate backlash for Truman if anti lynch or anti poll tax laws pass, with state legislatures ready to strike names of the president and running mate.
Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov appears in Who's Who in America for the first time alongside Frank Sinatra Roy Rogers Gandhi Frank Leahy and about 5400 others. The directory lists 1428 former army and navy brass hats. See MOLOTOV page 3.
Jerusalem ground to a halt as gun patrols cover Britons, Arabs, and Jews after yesterdays bombing that killed 52 and left 88 injured. Rescue crews pull bodies from two hotels and multiple buildings as streets are mined and security zones tightened across the Jewish quarter.
Cumberland detectives nabbed Glen Rosier in a Front Street restaurant after setting a four hour trap. He escaped from Taylor County jail November 13 1947 and faces jail break and auto theft charges. Deputy W H Canfield left for Cumberland to bring him back for court. Rosier was found with a railroad ticket from New Castle.
In Grafton business continued with most shops open though holiday observances caused closures of the Post Office, First National Bank, Taylor County Court House, and regional gas offices along with federal and state offices. The city building and professional offices stayed open. A five year old named Orsia Tavley of Mell Crear died after clothing caught fire while playing with other children in Elkins.

Nine month old Billy McCloud was saved from a dangerous throat injury after doctors removed a safety pin lodged in his esophagus. The operation at W. L. Lance clinic in Charleston went well, and he remains in observation at Cuddin clinic with his parents nearby for infection checks.
President Truman called for congressional renewal of the Virgin Islands charter to stabilize the islands economy during his goodwill tour. He visited St. Croix and St. Thomas with Governor Hastie, noting the need for U S support and a bill restoring duties on locally manufactured goods. He planned to sail to Guantanamo Bay then Key West for a nine day vacation as part of his trip.
Dr. Robert F. Gerkin a local optometrist and city councilman was reelected chair of Taylor County Farming for Better Living advisory council at the annual reorganizational meeting. J Paul Murphy was elected vice president and Lloyd M. Reid county agent was reelected secretary. Committeemen urge area farmers to enroll. blanks available at the county agent’s office or Monoreahada Power office. Last year 50 farm families enrolled and 20 completed prospects. Mr and Mrs A N Wilson of Knotteville were the 1947 county prize winners.
Police Chief John Austin said officers wounded James William Vincent 37 of Lakeland Pennsylvania after a chase when he fled from a garage. Vincent, not seriously hurt, will face charges of breaking and entering. Jersey cows were imported from the island of Jersey into the United States in 1815.
Americans for Democratic Action ADA adopted a platform urging abolition of the House Committee on Un American Activities. The agenda includes outlawing the main Communist Party while favoring registration of all Communists and disclosure of funding and backgrounds of active members. It also seeks poll tax abolition and equal opportunity for all races creeds and origins. The group backs liberal congressmen in November and will take no presidential stand.
A freak snowstorm hit Grafton and Taylor county Saturday night, dropping five to six inches in about two hours from 9 to 11 PM. Pedestrian and vehicle travel were severely hampered citywide with highways less impacted due to warmer conditions.
Angeles police probe alleged fraternity initiation at Beta Theta Pi where pledges were allegedly ordered to bring a freshly killed dog to the fraternity house during initiation week. Animal control officials quote the pledge’s actions and the incident is being reviewed for legal action.
