Wilmington North Carolina February 20 Four sailors from the American freighter Chippewa drowned when a small boat returning to the ship from shore leave at Southport capsized. Identified as William Creech Southport M Straham seaman P Casey seaman M Coklin oiler. Coast guard crews searched for the bodies.
Information from Mrs. Ed ith Liggett spurs a city and state wide manhunt for the machine gun tied to the unsolved murder of Walter W. Liggett publisher. A district court jury acquitted Kid Cann of murder, ending the trial that followed Mrs Liggett’s plea for justice.
In Moundsville on February 20, neighbors found Fred E Tyler Jr in Elkins West Virginia a week after his father. Officers say the wounds were self inflicted and related to personal safety. The report notes the youth died by his own action during a visit to Elkins.
Fifty five district and state WPA heads met to apportion a March budget cut. Administrator F Witcher McCullough warned that the $100,000 monthly target drops to $94,000, prompting further personnel and expense reductions. He outlined reorganization plans and called the meeting to resolve issues from the change.
Huntington February 20 fire at the Huntington Stove and Foundry Co caused by an overheated stove wiped out part of the main foundry and a new storage building. President Roland C. Mossman said damages could reach 40000 with patterns and machinery destroyed. Five companies fought the blaze for three hours. freezing temps and a burst hose hindered efforts. No injuries reported.
BROOKLYN N Y Feb 20 A jury convicted three defendants of murder in the second degree for the garage slaying last March 3 Samuel Drukman The trio Meyer Luckman Harry Luckman and Fred Hull were sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Erskine Rogers to indeterminate terms of 20 years to life at Sing Sing prison The state said Drukman was slain for stealing from the Luckmans to cover gambling losses that reached 500 a day on a 60 weekly salary
Washington dispatch reports Lewis county young Democrats plan a rally to attack Senator Rush D. Holt and the Works Progress Administration in West Virginia. Holt will speak in Weston and criticizes State Administrator F. W. McCullough as part of a bid to influence state politics ahead of a governor election.
Weston West Virginia February reports James Chambers state board of control announced Monday start on rebuilding burned Weston Hospital for insane left wing. Theodore Lansbury of Parkersburg completed architects’ job. $110000 project slated to finish by June 30. Board treasurer John Baker White says current buildings overcrowded with 1570 patients in space for under 1000. The wing burned last fall.
Citizens of Richwood in Nicholas county vote to decide if a state liquor store will operate in the county after a dry vote last fall. A bid to block the election failed when Judge J W Bary ruled 129 petition signers were not legal voters. Richwood previously opposed liquor by a 35 point margin.

Wayne West Virginia report says state troopers concluded a fire that killed two men, Henry Adkins aged 50 and his son Charles 29, started after an early Sunday altercation at the Adkins home on Beech Fork. Coroner R C Dilley cited a possible stove incident amid a dispute over drinking. Charles allegedly forced his wife to leave.
Sheriff Roy Hardman and Prosecutor George Becrist said Leroy Milligan of Youngstown confessed to a torch slaying that left the body of Earl Wilden found in a roadside ditch. Milligan said he killed in a dispute over a relationship with Wilson, a spiritual doctor, during a six year friendship.
Brig General Mitchell known as “stormy petrel” and first American officer to fly over enemy lines in World War I died at a New York hospital after a long career in the Army Air Force. He criticized aviation policies and commanded U S air forces in the war. The illness was heart disease.
About 765 ex service men in Tay ar county filed applications for the adjusted compensation to be released to World War veterans in June. Of these 465 applied through Memorial City post of the VFW while the rest used the American Legion. Legion leader Earsel Pepper of Grafton said applications were slow as many plan to take interest bearing bonds after issuance. A Legion meeting with ex service men is set for Flemington Saturday night to discuss any bonus issues.
Secretary Roper announced a report on the effects of the NRA collapse has been turned over to President Roosevelt with a recommendation for public release alongside other NRA studies. The study, prepared under special orders from the president, estimated how hours and wages were affected by the loss of codes.
James Curnett testified that his mother-in-law Berbie Brockman urged him to write a suicide note and nearly forced poisoned pudding into his mouth. Brockman stands trial in Los Angeles for attempted murder.
