The Taylor County Board of Education meets to seek state approval for a referendum placing school personnel under the Social Security program. Kenneth Daugherty leads petitioners with F C Waggoner and others on the committee. The board also authorizes buying six lots behind the Junior High and requests an attorney general opinion on member pecuniary interest. Routine bills are approved. Supts Rohrbough Knotts Brown Trussler and others depart for the Atlantic City conference February 18 through 19.
The forecaster warned of rain with possible thundershowers tonight and Saturday. Yesterday’s high reached 61 and the low 40. At 11 am today the temperature was 50 with rainfall recorded at 0.46 inches.
Temperatures are expected 3 to 5 degrees above normal with mild weather in the southeast this Saturday. Sunday turns colder, then warmer Monday before another cooling trend Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain is forecast for Saturday with rain or snow in the northern portion on Sunday and again around Tuesday. Total precipitation ranges from a half to four tenths of an inch in rainfall equivalent.
The Rev. W K Wayne 35 of Valley Fork was found dead from a self inflicted shotgun wound. A Clay County coroner jury ruled the death a personal safety related incident. Wayne on convalescent leave from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Clarksburg had served as pastor of St Pauls Methodist Church in St Pleasant. He was a World War II veteran and a Morris Harvey College and Vanderbilt alum. He is survived by his widow two daughters and two sons. Funeral services will be held here Saturday.
A special meeting approved a contract with John B. Rodgers Production Company of Fostoria Ohio to direct Grafton’s Centennial celebration activities this spring. The contract totals 5625 with over 3000 pledged to underwrite, proceeds to underwriters if financially successful. A non profit corporation will be formed under West Virginia law to plan and carry out the 100th birthday celebration with diverse community representation.
A total of 736 persons received Salk polio serum shots Thursday afternoon at the Taylor County Health Clinic Junior High school. There were people still in line when the serum ran out. 607 received first shots and 329 second shots, including three pregnant mothers. Ages ranged from under five to 14 with 143 under five, 213 between five and nine, and 377 in the 10 to 14 group. The Taylor County Medical Society, professional nurses, and Women of Moose aided. The health office will be closed Wednesday and Mrs. Cather will attend a state health conference in Charleston Monday for further vaccine program details.
Ronald L. Knotts reports the 1956 March of Dimes surpasses prior years with a total of 2488.47 dollars. He cites growing local interest, thanks volunteers including Mothers March and Mrs Knotts, and notes final tally awaiting late family cards to be mailed before a complete February report.
An official of the American Dental Hygienists Association said West Liberty State College is setting the pace for dental hygiene education, signaling strong support and a lead in training.
Grafton churches observe World Day of Prayer tonight at 7 30. Services are at First Baptist Church with Rev. E E fuite delivering the sermon.
Ralph William Robinson aged 54, formerly of Grafton, died in a Cur Bay boat accident near Glen Burnie Maryland on February 14. He served 14 years in the Merchant Marines. Survived by wife Mary Knight and five children. Brothers George and Dorsey Robinson reside in Grafton. Sisters include Mrs Paschal Stevens of Grafton and Mrs Bessie Grimm of Watson, and Mrs Vincent Ball of McKeesport Pa.
Washington AFL CIO Electrical Workers union accepted a federal mediation proposal to meet with Westinghouse Electric Corp officials to pursue an all out effort to end the 124 day strike. Federal mediator Joseph F. Finnegan urged immediate resumption of negotiations based on his February 4 recommendations.
Visiting mayors from 225 cities clashed over information from the annual civil defense conference at its opening session. Aurora mayor Paul Eagan called the gathering a waste of time, saying he would have little new to report home, while New York’s Robert F. Wagner and Detroit’s Albert B. Cobo favored continuing to learn more.
FBI agents arrested 35 year old Arthur Greene, a former Walla Walla state prisoner and one of the ten most wanted fugitives, at a Nashville apartment where he had lived alone under an assumed name since last November.
The administration halted delivery of 18 light U S tanks to Saudi Arabia after protests and a Senate probe call. The shipment had been loaded aboard the SS James Monroe in Brooklyn and was set to sail. Export permits to the Middle East were temporarily suspended pending review.
A Stratofortress B-52 from Castle AFB crashed during a routine training flight near Sacramento to Stockton, California. Four or five airmen were believed killed. a survivor said nine men were aboard. The Air Force urged residents to watch for wreckage pieces and turn them in to authorities.
Ohio County grand jury reconvened for Tuesday morning to consider the Cub Scout murder case. Twins Ja my and Joseph Williams, both 14, are charged with killing nine year old David Powell. They were arrested after Powell was bludgeoned. Judge McKee ordered the jury to meet at 10:30 a.m. on Feb 21. Prosecutor Gompers said an attorney's microphone claim was misleading and noted the boys' civil rights were not violated.
President Eisenhower today signed a record of the controversial natural gas bill that would free gas producers from direct federal regulation. Dr. Harry G. Camper, 71, founder of Stevens Clinic Hospital and prominent banker, died in his sleep at his suburban home in Welch.
