Frigid conditions loom as a cold front moves in, with tonight and Sunday turning partly cloudy and chilly. Highs reach the forties today, while a 30 day outlook forecasts below normal temperatures from the East to mid nation and possible substantial snowfall through mid March.
Charles Riley Hines of Webster Springs was arrested at 3 a.m. by State Trooper H. E. Parks on drunken driving charges. He pled not guilty before Justice W. C. Lawson and filed notice to appeal to circuit court after an incident that damaged Herman Males’ truck at the US 119 and 250 intersection.
The West Virginia Air National Guard and Ground Observer Corps will hold a second joint exercise this month to test the aircraft warning system. Target cities include Huntington Bluefield White Sulphur Springs W Va Marietta Pomeroy Ironton Ohio and Tazewell Va.
Circuit Judge W Merle Watkins refused to dissolve the temporary injunction preventing removal of Grafton City Hospital board members Arthur Yates C Glen Harman Arlie Leonard R Virgil Rohrbough Dr Robert Gerkin and Richard Bord. City must post a 300 bond if appealing to West Virginia Supreme Court. Public hearing on hospital ordinance set for February 28.

Robert C. Jarrell first mayor of South Charleston lies in state to be buried Sunday in South Charleston after dying Thursday night from cancer. The 66 year old retired gas company official mailed his photo and obituary to Charleston newspapers beforehand. Funeral services set for First Methodist Church in South Charleston.
Thomas D Brash Jr of Hilltop was electrocuted Friday when a long section of pipe he held touched a high voltage line outside his home in Oak Hill West Virginia.
Local Justice of the Peace Ona C. Jefferys recalls the 1876 Hayes vs Tilden presidential race. He was five when a Democrat pinned a party emblem on him and he campaigned for Tilden, later noting Hayes won after a contested result. He compares past campaigns with modern ones.
A very important meeting of the Grafton High School Alumni Committee is set for Monday at 7 30 in the Grafton High School Library to decide if an alumni activity or reunion can be held this year. The group will discuss dates, suggestions from various classes, and potential scale changes from the 1955 reunion.
Luther Payne 52, manager of Bruel Smokeless Coal Co. Otsego, died when two trucks were struck by a train at a crossing near Otsego. Injured were James Tollivar 27 and Mickey Byars 27, both of Ravencliff, Wyoming County.
Washington story notes Army tradition favors horse drawn caissons for Arlington funerals. A 16 horse stable cost 175 dollars while motorized hearses run 2.15. After opposition the Army halted the sale and kept the horses as of the June 1 deadline.

A six alarm fire destroyed the Mazur Hotel in Glassport and damaged Holy Reary grade school in Homewood Pittsburgh. Firemen smashed windows with rocks due to weak water pressure. The blaze marked the second general alarm in Pittsburgh that day and the fifth in four weeks with about $150,000 damage to the school.

Washington The Treasury Department asked Congress to allow raising the interest rate on government savings bonds from 3 percent to as high as 4 4 percent with flexible authority.
