Charleston reports a $6.4 million increase for public school teachers will be included in the budget as state aid to county systems but not allocated by the formula. A companion bill directs extra funds be distributed proportionally outside the formula to prevent inequitable shares due to property assessments. New minimum salaries vary by degree, with Doctor’s amnestes at 240 and up, Bachelor’s at 310, and scale adjusted for certificates, while experienced increments largely remain unchanged.
London reports the death of 8th Viscount Trenchard, key architect of Britain's air power in World War I. Born during the Boer War era, he served with South Africa's Bushmen Corps before leading the Royal Flying Corps from 1915 to 1917 as the world’s first tactical air force commander.

Four year old Craig Giannamore of Steubenville Ohio bathes in Lourdes water at Une Grotto Our Lady of Lourdes for the last time as his parents Eugene and Mrs Giannamore attend a ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the Virgin Mary apparition to Bernadette Soubirous. Doctors say Craig will die of leukemia soon.
The Grafton Centennial Committee will meet at City Hall tonight at 7:30 p.m. All committee members are urged to attend, said general chairman George Shingleton.
The weather man still forecasts rain for Grafton and nearby areas tonight and Saturday. He has missed his guesses for the last three days except for a few sprinkles. Yesterday’s high reached 57 and the low last night was 24. By 11 today the temperature was 42.
The body of a Cub Scout, aged twelve, was found dumped in a yard on Wheeling Island after he failed to return home for dinner following a school day and selling tickets for a benefit show. Otto Blesk, the boy’s stepfather, reported the disappearance. Wheeling Island is a middle class district in the Ohio River area.
Danny Kaye entertained Princess Marz at a London performance with a mixed audience, singing Minnie the Moocher. He corrected a backstage rumor by insisting he called her Ma’am not Honey. The princess attended the premiere of his film The Court Jester and enjoyed his entire repertoire.

United Press reports the Senate Agriculture Committee sent the omnibus farm aid bill to the Senate floor in a bruising vote of 12 to 1. The measure includes a $1.1 billion sell bank and price supports at 90 percent parity. eight to seven for the supports. Some members reserve the right to challenge rigid supports on the floor. Republicans expect a veto if rigid price props stay. Democrats think the president may sign to save the sell bank.
Bell Telephone laboratories report tests of a musical tune device as a potential replacement for the telephone bell. The device is designed to play a tune when the line rings, signaling a call rather than using the traditional bell sounds. The announcement indicates early experimentation.
