Venable and Lowe are Democrats linked to the Democrats for Eisenhower Revercomb Underwood group, raising anticipated opposition from Senate Democrats who outnumber Republicans 21 to 1.

The United States Weather Bureau reports the nation’s lowest temperature today as nine degrees below zero at Glasgow Montana. The warmest spot on Thursday was in Laredo Texas, where temperatures reached a higher value.
In Charleston the West Virginia House of Delegates approved a civil service measure on a straight party line 96 to 40 vote. Democrats praised the bill as good government extending protections to hundreds of state jobs, while Republicans argued it risks politicizing or freezing workers with limited public input. The bill, already backed by Senate Democrats, heads to concurrence in Senate amendments.
