William D Horgan reports from New York on a dramatic week in grain markets led by a sharp drop in wheat and corn at Chicago Minneapolis and Kansas City. Prices slumped across futures and wholesale sectors stirring worry over living costs and potential recession.
Huntington Feb 7 A man described by police as the No 1 suspect in the slaying of Elmo Rice a Columbus Ohio real estate agent roamed at large today a fugitive from Huntington state hospital Capt Gloria C Hoffman Columbus police detective bureau says Homer Jack Dean 37 is the hottest lead in the two month old Rice slaying Dean is charged with robbery forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses he escaped an undidmed attendant at the hospital yesterday Rice disappeared after showing his car to a prospective buyer and was found dead on a suburban road the next morning police note the case remains unsolved ahead of further updates.
A bluefield to Princeton area sleet storm shut roads briefly then melted, leaving icy surfaces and stalled vehicles. One death occurred in Charleston as ice loosened from a houseboat on Elk River. Three houseboats damaged. two residents rescued. Weather continued with rain, colder temps, and more snow possible Sunday. river levels fluctuated.
Five armed forces personnel died when AB-25 from Wright Field crashed into Roundtop Mountain near Jasper Arkansas two miles south of the county seat. Wright Field reports the crew of five including a navy airman perished. the plane was en route to Little Rock.
Jefferson County Feb. 7 The libel suit filed by columnist Drew Pearson against the Jefferson Republican was settled after a four day trial. A letter from editor Raymond Funkhouser aided the settlement and the judge had earlier ruled Pearson had been libeled by the paper. The case centered on alleged damages to Pearson from a "commie" accusation.
Kurt Von Schuschnigg chancellor of Austria during the Nazi invasion will speak at a West Virginia University convocation in Morgantown on March 3. The former leader spent seven years in concentration camps and has lectured at Harvard University while touring the U.S. as a visiting professor.
Washington February 7 Both sides in the Senate dispute over extending rent controls began a cooling off period to February 16. Chairman Tobey will convene the Banking Committee to draft a bill. The subcommittee proposal would extend controls to April 30 1949 allow no limit increases when leases run through 1949 remove ceilings on certain tenants and permit automatic increases if costs rise. The plan also calls removing ceilings on leases signed under prior laws.
Ten Taylor county farm families have enrolled in the 1948 Farming for Better Living Program. The program, in its ninth year, aims to promote good farming methods and better farmer business relations. It will close April 2 with a banquet where enrollees receive awards. Washington Feb 7 Gen Omar N Bradley assumes the Army Chief of Staff role today, replacing Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower, who retires from active duty after years of service and plans to become president of Columbia University. Eisenhower will remain a five star general with pay for life and awaits two months of military leave before his transition. Bradley, 55, is Eisenhower’s West Point classmate and led four armies through North Africa, Italy, and France, finalizing the German surrender.
Winter weary Grafton residents faced a setback as the planned Main Street snow and ice removal was canceled at noon. Harley Haller of the State Road Commission said no equipment could remove the crusted snow. a diesel four-wheel grader was requested from Clarksburg but arrived too late to help today. City workers and volunteers will shovel as much as possible this afternoon and tomorrow, but the effort is unlikely to clear the street fully.
Charleston February 7 The record breaking 13 683 31 dollars paid in state gasoline taxes by West Virginia motorists last year marked an increase of about 61 percent over 1937. President R D Lowe of the West Virginia petroleum association says the rise means a substantial boost in highway revenues and a larger special tax burden on one group of citizens.
Prime minister De Valera, leader for 16 years, faces a reduced Fianna Fail majority after 66 of 147 seats won in the general election. Coalition partners bring total to 76 seats. five more seats to be decided in Carlow and Kilkenny next Tuesday. The New Dail convenes February 18 to elect a premier.
New Delhi reports government probes possible complicity by Tej Singh the Maharajah of Alwar and his prime minister Dr N B Khare in Gandhi assassination and seeks to keep them outside their state to ensure a full inquiry into RSS activities. Gandhi ashes to be sent by train to rivers Jumna Ganges Saraswati with ritual abstinence observed. Congress urges communal harmony.
Walter H. Wolfe of 533 West Main Street Grafton filed his certificate of announcement and filing fee for the state auditor race in Charleston with expectations of receipt Monday morning. A farmer shop manager and former teacher, Wolfe has spent eight years as a sales representative for John Wenzel Company. He was born in Glenville 1898 and studied at Morgantown Glenville State College WVU University of Pittsburgh and Fairmont State College.
New York report says Benjamin Feldman a 40 year old Brooklyn pharmacist was convicted of first degree murder for the 1943 strychnine poisoning of his wife Harriet. The all male jury rejected mercy and the death sentence is mandatory. Feldman previously spent nine months on death row at Sing Sing before his prior conviction.
In Munich a 32 year old blonde woman Miss Hedwig Munz says she is engaged to Fritz Kuhn and hopes to marry him soon. Kuhn, former leader of the German American band in the United States, escaped Dachau internment camp awaiting a denazification trial. Police across Germany hunt him. he has a wife and two children and is American educated.
The eighth burglary in two weeks hit Grafton Cleaners last night with a small cash loot. Proprietor Andy Delligatti notified city police, who are probing whether juveniles or an experienced gang is behind the citywide spree that has affected multiple businesses since two weeks ago.
Mac McFarland a longtime city electrician resigned his post to City Manager Curtis D Decker. The resignation was accepted but a successor has not yet been named. McFarland lived in the Bank and Trust Company building apartments and left the position effective last Thursday.

Wheat fell and rose in thin margins while flour and lard cut retail prices. economists warned retail costs may not fully match wholesale declines and uncertainty lingered about a wider break.
In Wakulla Springs Florida on February 7 southern governors gathered to discuss graduate education for African Americans but the meeting quickly turned into a political forum. Mississippi Governor Wright urged forming an all southern party while criticizing Truman on race segregation anti lynch laws and the civil rights act. Governor Thompson of Georgia responded with confidence that the plan would fail.
A Norfolk and Western passenger train derailed near Madison North Carolina injuring six trainmen but miraculously sparing all 30 passengers. The locomotive plowed into a road building and three workers escaped injury as the crash damaged the commissary area. A company factor named George and his daughter were among those mentioned in the chaotic incident.
