Washington reports Senate and Foley disagree on how to build a good six thousand dollar house to unlock housing supply. Hearings on seven bills include slum clearance farm housing and over one million low rent units. Democrats plan to delay filibuster showdown while other panels clash over Taft Hartley.
Tehran remains under martial law after an assassination attempt on Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. The 29 year old would be assassin, identified as a newspaper reporter, was captured and beaten by bystanders. The incident heightens Iran oil and Cold War tensions as Russia seeks concessions while a British owned company operates the fields.
In Charleston on February 5 the court of claims recommended a 500 dollar award to Sarah Ann Brown of Clay county. The 94 year old claimed a secondary road was rebuilt across her property after a county road supervisor promised improvements including a bridge which were never completed.
In Washington on February 5, Senator Robert Taft asserted Congress will preserve about 40 provisions of the Taft Hartley Act. Senator Elbert Thomas and Senator Claude Pepper challenged him, saying the repeal and revisions are possible under Tru man proposals. Pepper warned Republicans aligned with Taft face more defeats.
Ex convict Harry Dodds Junior confessed to the murder of Eleanor Gifford in Athens Ohio. Private investigator Paul E Brown and Sheriff George Bateman report that Grover E Rawlins a Fort Knox soldier and a third unidentified man are being sought and will face murder charges. The three allegedly robbed the cottage of the 52 year old church worker who had connections with local religious activities.
The State Medical Association plans a Charleston hearing to press for a four year medical and dental school and hospital in Charleston while Monongalia county society supports Morgantown. A proposed Martinsburg veterans hospital hit a snag as VA officials say need remains. A second hearing Monday will review a proposed ninety million dollar veterans bonus bill with a finance provision urged by the House Veterans committee.
PT PLEASANT Feb 5 Coast Guardsmen are dragging the Kanawha river near Pt Pleasant for the body of one of two seamen who drowned when their eight foot dinghy overturned in the river. The victims were attached to boats repairing river channel markers. One body was recovered. the other remains missing as officials investigate the accident.

Clarksburg Feb 5 Harri son County Prosecutor Philip Clifford says a Stonewood couple appealed for help disposing of a baby left with them for two weeks nine weeks ago. Stephen and Mrs Liptack say another Stonewood couple left the child in November with 50 dollars for care and then fled. The father promised to return on January 2 but never did. The couple cannot support or care for the girl and seek a court order to relinquish the infant. A volcano near Tokyo erupted after 97 years dormant, scattering ash over a wide area.
In Budapest on February 5, prosecutors called for the equivalent of a death sentence for Cardinal Mindszenty and the six co defendants charged with treason. The judge had said sentences would not be announced before Monday, though a government spokesman privately suggested a verdict around midnight Budapest time. The prosecutor urged removing Mindszenty as “one of the last remnants of reaction” in the Communist state, while the Cardinal’s defense asked for a wise and lenient decision.
A fierce blizzard in the Sierra blankets U S Highway 40 closing thirty miles from Baxter's Camp to Donner Grade for five hours. Winds at Donner Summit hit 75 mph. Patrol reports two to three thousand skiers stranded and travelers lodging in any available space as the weekend erases parking at the summit.
Wray D. McQuay, a Grafton native killed in action during the Luzon invasion in World War II, will be returned for re interment. His body arrives next Tuesday at Bartlett Funeral home for viewing after 7 p m. Funeral services are set for 1 30 p m Wednesday with Rev Harry Eckels officiating. He will be laid to rest in Bluemont cemetery beside his father Samuel B. McQuay, who died September 7 1947. The local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will render military honors.
Charles Jam Miller 59 of Flemington waived a preliminary hearing on murder charges in the shotgun slaying of his daughter Nora Burl Duvall. Miller appeared with deputy Ray Matthews in Justice Court, hoped his brother would arrange counsel, and asked about bond as circuit court action awaits grand jury. Duvall, mother of three, was shot as she left Miller’s residence with her husband and children.

GREENUP Kentucky February five A man once sentenced to 17 years for a shotgun slaying is freed on probation after hundreds urged clemency. Sherman McBrayer thirty four years old a former coach at Raceland high school, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Vincent See of Moorefield West Virginia last month. See worked on a railroad construction job in Russell West Virginia.
Independence man J W Stobaughy invites Premier Stalin to visit President Truman's hometown, while his wife Mrs Stobaugh is in Goodland Kansas. She comments she will return home to dust and housework.
W D Myers the local government weather observer released January figures showing a high of 66 degrees and a low of 8 degrees. The average highs and lows were 50 and 32 degrees respectively with rainfall at 5.86 inches, 1.40 inches above last year. The 18th reached 66 degrees while the 30th dropped to 8 degrees and yesterday saw a high of 47 and a low of 30. Today more sunshine with 35 at 1 pm.
Old Doc Stork visited Grafton City Hospital delivering a double birth report. Bertha Elizabeth Costlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. Costlow of Tove Avenue, weighed five pounds, fifteen ounces. A second newborn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fletch Shriver of Fairmont, is noted. Mr. Costlow works in the circulation department of the Grafton Sentinel.
