In Charleston on February 5 a 14 year old girl Mildred Prost lies in a hospital with a bullet in her head from an excited movie patron who fired during a Western. Hospital staff say her condition is fair. Police Chief W A Tully released two youths held for questioning and said neither is implicated. The doorman provided a description of the likely shooter as investigators pursued the case. The incident happened during a neighborhood theater Western thriller last night triggering a theater uproar as Mildred and her sisters watched from the balcony.
TEWKSBURY Mass Feb 5 Four deaths were charged to John Mack 79 who stalked the infirmary men ward at dawn firing a pistol after saying whispers about him Three other patients Michael O Keefe 68 James McGee 78 and Edward Mercier 70 died yesterday A fifth victim Joseph O Donnell 55 is in serious condition Mack is held without bail on murder charges.
Marlene Dietrich filed a suit in Los Angeles claiming she overpaid income taxes and seeks to file a separate return on community property for 1931 and 1932. She states her husband Rudolph Sieber, a German director, cannot obtain work in the U S due to language barriers.
The Taylor County Board of Trade retail trade committee will meet at 8 PM Tuesday in the YMCA building to discuss preliminaries for a Dollar Day in March. Major D. R. Chaffee, trade board secretary, urged all interested retailers to attend and assist the committee.
Two charter members of the Grafton lodge of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen were honored at a meeting in the Red Men hall Brinkman building. The group traces to its March 20 1892 founding with 32 original inductees. last night's session noted two of those original members still in service. About 50 members attended the gathering.
Kansas City reports 178000 registered voters as 256000 ballots were cast in the 1936 general election. Fifty election officials were convicted of fraud and 112 await trial. General registration closed for the March primary where Col Fred Whitten seeks to unseat Mayor Brice B. Smith with support from independent Democrats and the Pendergast machine.
Washington reports the Soviet government agreed to allow a United States official to see Mrs. Ruth Rubens, an American imprisoned in Russia on espionage suspicions. Charge dAffaires Henderson said Moscow accepted the long standing U S demand for access. It followed earlier refusals pending police investigation. Hull stressed the principle of immediate access for American diplomats as the case developed.
Taylor county students will have no school on Friday February 18 as county teachers attend a district round table in Weston. County School Superintendent E. G. Kuhn announced the mid month holiday to allow teachers to participate in the event.
Senate leaders indicate plans to set aside the anti-lynching bill next week after a 52 to 34 defeat on shelving. Majority Leader Barkley of Kentucky said the session should not be wasted in futile discussion and that anti-lynching speechmaking would continue. The measure was displaced by a $1.4 billion independent appropriations bill, with further farm bill action expected.
Former Pittsburgh mayor William N McNair urged trade treaties, saying the United States signs a contract with Britain to sell goods, start factories, then buys from Britain what she can spare, paid for by profits from manufacturing for export.
Fayette county probation officer Mrs. Helen Regan said a five year old girl was found confined in a farm storage room seventeen miles from Uniontown. Neighbors had not seen the child, and humane society officials said she was kept there as punishment. E M Smith of the humane society reported that David Harris, a 69 year old farmer, claimed his daughter Martha forced the child to stay in the storage room. Charges of neglect of a minor were filed against Harris and his daughter.
Curtis T. Lambert of Philippi will help promote West Virginia on NBC WJZ next Tuesday night February 8. He previously worked in Grafton as assistant cashier at the First National Bank and leads the Barbour county unit of the Upper Ohio Valley association.
In Columbus Ohio February 5 police called a $3500 bank robbery solved after a gun battle that left three suspects dead and four wounded. Detective Robert Cline died of wounds after a 20 minute exchange. four officers were injured and one suspect named Mac remains unidentified. Figuli, also of Cleveland, escaped and was later jailed. Most loot recovered from the bank holdup near the hideout.
The February membership committee of the Taylor County Board of Trade will meet at 7:30 PM Monday in the board’s rooms in the Tregellas building. Major Don R. Chaffee, executive secretary, announced. A general meeting to select a new directorate will follow, as previously announced for Monday evening February 14.
Leonard Humphries a 17-year-old Grafton youth who admitted involvement in robberies across Grafton Fairmont Clarksburg Chicago and Cincinnati failed in an escape from the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys at Pruntytown yesterday. He had been an inmate since December 1926 after fleeing in November and during two months at the school he allegedly stole hundreds of dollars in cash and valuable jewelry before being recaptured in Grafton and returned for questioning Pending further action.
MOUNDSVILLE Feb 5 The warden weighs confinement options for Mattie Goins the diminutive woman condemned for the shovel slaying of Robert Mitchell. If hanged she becomes Marion County s first execution and the first woman to die on the Moundsville penitentiary gallows.
Buffalo West Virginia February 5 Magistrate V N Meedings ordered detention of five relatives awaiting a hearing for Bob McCoy 21 charged with slaying his grandmother Mrs Sarah Ellen Oldaker 75 whose body was found in a vegetable cellar Meedings said progress would be announced at 7 pm McCoy admitted shooting but said he did not know she was hit Also held were Mrs Grace McCoy Oscar McCoy Susie Blankenship Billi Blankenship and James McCoy The state police reported $18 found during the investigation.
George Henry Partridge of Vancouver pleaded innocent in Seattle Superior Court to charges from an unsuccessful effort to bomb the Japanese liner Higo Maru in Seattle harbor last month. His companion Dolphe M. Forsyth, also of Vancouver, drowned while trying to float a bomb laden raft toward the vessel.
The United States asked Japan if it plans to build ships larger than 35000 tons and warned it would resume full liberty of action if no reply by February 20.
