Charleston February 2 West Virginia ends the last week of standard time today and will probably observe daylight saving time starting February 9 at 2 a m federal law makes daylight saving mandatory in interstate commerce and on government projects to conserve electric power governmental units already indicate acceptance of the plan.

Cairo Feb 2 The British retreat about 100 miles from Bengasi under Axis pressure described as considerable in strength. Maraua 85 miles east of Bengasi saw fighting while Slonta area 19 miles northeast saw engagement. British counterattacks at Maraua inflicted casualties. Indian brigade moved through axis lines to eastern bases.
In Kansas City six firemen were injured when a fire truck and a chief's car collided at a downtown intersection while rushing to a Welding plant on defense orders. One fireman died. No damage estimate was given.
Governor Neely condemned “pitiful grousing” by those unwilling to sacrifice for defense and said he would not block government use of Lakin State hospital or any other West Virginia property. Dr. Grover C. Robertson of the state board said Mason county’s insane asylum might house offices for a proposed Point Pleasant explosives plant, prompting sharp reaction.

In Charleston, February 2, William Elmer Backus, 32, paymaster for the Kanawha and Hocking Coal Company at Mammoth, died in a hospital yesterday from an accidental bullet wound. He was wounded Thursday while checking his pistol before leaving with the payroll for the company.
Fresh Soviet victories on the winter front from Lenin grad to the Crimea include a reported 55 mile advance in the Ukraine and destruction of a Nazi Elite Guards battalion. The mid and midnight communiques noted centers of resistance destroyed and continued Red Army operations, with one unit on the Kalin front near Moscow killing 350 German officers and men in capture.
