The Grafton area plans a subdued New Year’s Eve as 1957 ends and 1958 begins. City offices close for Wednesday as residents attend watch night services and dances. State troopers and city police issue warnings to avoid drunken driving and disturbances during New Year’s celebrations.

James Tilley, 28, of Hernedon, tried to scare noisy neighbors by lighting dynamite near his home. The blast severed his left hand and caused leg injuries. He is reported recovering at Bluefield hospital. Domestic burglars in Chicago looted the Robert Anderson residence taking multiple valuables and $77 in cash.
The Sentinel will not publish its regular edition tomorrow to allow the staff to observe New Year celebrations with families and friends. Management and staff extend best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year.

Eleven year old Donald Krug died after pulling a pin on a live hand grenade found in his Colorado Springs home. The blast injured him and drove metal fragments into his chest and stomach as three siblings watched. His mother blamed a soldier named forth Carson Cole who had previously lived there. Jech, the stepfather, said he did not recognize the grenade and believed it was harmless.
Getysburg Pennsylvania reports President Eisenhower shows no plan to resign and feels physically capable of serving. Doctors concur with his view he does not see himself as a part time president and prefers to stay active despite illness and frequent absences. Critics in both parties urge stepping aside while Eisenhower remains adamant in continuing his duties.
West Virginia lawmakers questioned Gov. Cecil Underwood’s call to study education incentives during the 1958 budget session opening January 3. Senate leader Carrigan questioned financing methods, Traubert urged action but noted no financing plan, Bachmann urged more time to craft a 1959 package.
Charleston West Virginia In-State Police Superintendent Fair today urged the Legislature to add 100 troopers to combat a rising highway death toll. The request was rejected by the Board of Public Works citing budget limits as 1958-59 plans were prepared, with 476 traffic deaths recorded in 1957 and 439 in 1956.

Police report a double tragedy near Hagerstown Maryland as Joha Merie Shingleton, 53, shot his estranged wife Opal Beatrice Shingleton, 44, with a 30-30 rifle at a friend’s home before killing himself. The couple were separated and the incident occurred Sunday at Mt. Aetna, near Ma.
