Shinnston Youth Held After Arson Attempts

Charleston December 30 state Fire Marshall Watkins said a 21 year old youth is held on a lunacy warrant after attempting arson to destroy Shinnston by targeting a gas plant and disrupting gas pressure townwide. Flames leaped from stoves in numerous homes posing fire and asphyxiation risks.

Yacht Owner Found Slain on High Seas

San Pedro report says Dwight L. Faulding 49 a Santa Barbara hotel operator was shot aboard the disabled schooner Aaffe. The Perseus towed the vessel toward Los Angeles as FBI agent W H Osborne was ordered to San Diego to take charge after the yacht’s docking. Navy planes sighted the body marked with COC on a sail.

GREAT FALLS Mont Dec 30 County Attorney Phil Greenan said a 47 year old ranch woman signed a statement admitting she poisoned three neighbors over an insult about her looks The Ogdens and their son Cecil 20 survived when excess poison in their flour acted as an antidote The woman Rose Krippen confessed anger at the Ogdens wife calling her homely and urging her to leave the ranch and move to town

Stores Shut on Saturday in Grafton for New Year

Stores in Grafton will close on New Year’s Day with inventory in some shops and government offices, including the First National Bank. The liquor store will stay open. Most retailers are urged to close Friday. groceries may have morning hours Saturday in some places. The Grafton Sentinel will publish a Saturday edition on New Year’s Eve.

New Master Mechanic Takes Local Duties In Grafton

The West Virginia Liquor Commission store in Grafton remains open on New Year’s Day with manager John Madden announcing that January 1 is not an official holiday for the store. T. M. Sherrard, formerly in New York, has begun duties as master mechanic of the Monon division, succeeding Ralph H. Cline who led the Grafton shop for twelve years. Hours stay 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The store will not stay open past the usual closing time on New Year’s Eve.

Barbara Stanwyck fights to keep her adopted son

Barbara Stanwyck, the actress and ex wife of Frank Fay, opposes Fay's petition for temporary custody of their 5 year old adopted son Dion. She testified Fay used profane language in the child's presence and described an incident where Fay struck her, nearly hitting her with a chair. Stanwyck said Fay exposed the child to dangerous behavior and that the boy was recently back with Fay after a visit.

Birthday Ball Plans Drafted for Roosevelt Celebration

Preliminary plans for celebrating President Roosevelt's birthday in Grafton and Taylor County were drafted at a courthouse meeting to raise funds against infantile paralysis. Circuit Clerk Frank M. Hollis Jr. will chair. Events include a birthday ball at the Field house on Monday Jan 31 with a noted orchestra, a benefit bridge by the Grafton Woman's club on Jan 27, a birthday dinner on Jan 28, and a square dance at Rosemont on Jan 29.

One Dead One Jailed After Kidnaping in Missouri

Flat River Missouri December 30 Sheriff A A Bayles said a Monday night kidnaping led to one death and one arrest. Marvin Wright 24 lay in a morgue identified as the abductor leader of real estate dealer C A Desloge. Wall Street Boy Wonder Dies in Jail Hospital

OSSINING N Y Dec 30 Harold Russell Ryder known as the boy wonder of Wall Street is dead from a heart attack in Sing Sing prison hospital after being returned to serve a sentence for larceny. He was 41 and had recently been released on parole before entering the prison.

Japan says attacks on British ships in China waters were mistake

London says Japan issued a note to Britain admitting errors in attacks on the gunboat Ladybird and other British vessels in China waters. Japan promises strict discipline and full precautions to prevent future incidents and to protect lives and property of British and other nationals. The note resembles Japan’s prior explanation of the Panay bombing. The British foreign office released the note without comment on its sufficiency. A separate line says a British seaman was killed and two wounded on December 13.
