Germany Near Peace Plan If Italy Falls
Germany prepared to press for a full peace settlement with France allowing only Alsace and Lorraine to pass, if Italy collapses. Petain reportedly warned Nazis that if terms were unacceptable he would move forces into North Africa with Weyg and De Gaulle’s free French against Italian Libya from Tunisia, aided by British action from Egypt. Mass German redeployments to Romania were seen as insurance, with near half a million there by January. Soviets ready, concentration in southwestern Romania aimed at pressuring Yugoslavia and blocking Moldavia and Danube mouths, while Turkey’s stance could shift with Britain or Greece. Soviet forces reportedly moved 30 crack divisions into Bessarabia on the Romanian frontier.
