A minor auto crash in Rosemont yesterday at 3 45 p m caused at least 500 damage to two cars. James B Barnes Simpson was arrested by State Police on a hazardous driving charge after hitting Rosalee Davis Route 2 Salem who slowed in his path. Barnes to appear before Justice Ona Jeffreys.
Fire Chief H O Neal said Capt Bernard Trippett returned to duty with the department as police investigate thefts at Sears Roebuck in Parkersburg. Trippett, a 23 year veteran, faces grand jury action next month on charges of receiving stolen goods. Pvt R E Grimm withdrew his resignation, while Ronald Foster Lewis C Wright and Paul Cochran resigned after charges were filed. Pvt Jack V George did not resign.
The Baltimore and Ohio plans a system wide layoff of about 7 percent of its employes effective January 1, with roughly 300 workers on the Monongah Division and about 90 from motive power engineering and car repair. Traffic drops about 17 percent overall, car loadings on the Monongah Division about 10 percent below normal, prompting train consolidations and eliminations until demand improves. Local impact details were to be posted later today.
Taylor County circuit court judge W Merle Watkins orders a special term at the courthouse on Monday December 30 at 10 am to sell and confirm delinquent lands. No jurors will be called. Harry Friedman is deputy commissioner of delinquent lands and will oversee the sale and confirmation of prior delinquent sales.
State Beer Commissioner Roy Platt said state beer barrel tax collections for 1957 reached 3,416,811 dollars, up from 3,359,856 dollars last year. December receipts were 148,949 dollars versus 43,430 dollars in December 1956.
