Tokyo reports the Japanese government admits full responsibility for the sinking of the United States Gunboat Panay by Japanese planes. The note states those responsible will be punished and was handed to American ambassador Grew at 7 pm local time. The text was not published in Japan.
Inmates of the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys at Pruntytown will get a memorable Christmas. A carload of presents arrives from parents and relatives, with the state board of control adding candy oranges and apples for each boy. At 2 p.m. tomorrow an assembly will distribute gifts to all 380 boys. Turkey with dressing, cranberries, potatoes, cake, coffee and milk will be served from the school farm. Special dinner for officers includes gift exchange.
Deputies of Assessor Harry Batson will receive a ten percent wage increase effective January 1. The Taylor county court had previously voted a $19 monthly rise for three assistants to be effective July 1, 1938, but rescinded that order and then granted the January 1 increase. Clarence Kinsey J G Withers and O G Hall will earn 1920 next year replacing 1200 in 1937. the move raises the assessor budget by 100.
MOUNDSVILLE December 24 Thirty seven prisoners walked out of the state penitentiary with two lifers receiving conditional pardons as Christmas gifts from Governor Holt. The remaining 35 are inmates whose terms end today or soon. The governor also commuted five life sentences to 18 years, praising their excellent records. Pardons were granted to Charles Brown, 64, Berkeley County, 1920, and Emmett Lewis, 85, Braxton County.
Charleston dispatch reports the state's final hunting season opened today with rabbits as the target of the last assault. The conservation commission says game is plentiful and predicts a big kill before the season closes December 31. The split season runs November 13 to November 2.
In Likeiston Missouri on December 24 the state highway department placed signs along dangerous stretch of Route 61 reading It s Hell To Be Corpse and Death Rides This Road They say the signs were meant to warn motorists during the Christmas and New Year travel period and were spaced 50 feet apart along the hazardous section.
Four generation Roosevelt reunion fills White House with Christmas cheer as Franklin D. Roosevelt prepares to send holiday greetings by radio late today. The president hosts guests including his 84 year old mother Sara Delano Roosevelt and daughter Mrs John Boettiger who has just left a Seattle hospital.
Washington December 24 The treasury inactive gold fund marked its first anniversary with 1.232 billion on the books. It began with 14.835 million on December 24, 1936 and has grown into a major credit weapon. Morgenthau note none of the planned uses are immediate. The fund was reduced by 300 million last September as part of liquidation.
Following annual custom the Grafton Evening Sentinel will not publish tomorrow Christmas day and will resume Monday evening. City county and federal offices will be closed including the state liquor commission store.
Fred Cox who calls himself Prince Axon and has drawn police attention was ordered out of the city by Mayor E. O. Waugh in municipal court this morning. The oddly dressed man, nabbed at Grafton City hospital by Chief A. B. Lockhart and Patrolman J. Helms after causing a disturbance while seeking foot treatment, appeared with a clipping book and claimed fame through sensational acts.
In Wheeling on December 24, Judge William Casey awarded Charles Hackle and William Bonar of Moundsville the $1,000 Ohio County reward for the capture of Mrs. Anna Bris’s slayers. Bris was killed last year at her husband’s tavern in South Wheeling.
David Bland, previously sentenced to 60 days for wasoline theft, received Christmas parole from Circuit Judge Herbert W. Dent. The order directed Sheriff Herbert Evans to release Bland, who remains on two years probation.
Lester Post 22, a former CCC enrollee, is accused by police of causing a wave of terror on the west side from Wednesday night into yesterday. He was taken into custody by Sheriff Herbert Evans and Chief A. E. cd ab 8340 at the home of his father near Simpson. Chief Lockard said Post admitted being in Graf ton that night but otherwise would say little. Police say Patrolman Norman Smith fired a shot that missed Post and ricocheted into a second floor apartment. Post refused to discuss details, remarking, I don't remember what I did.
In Alliance Ohio Marshall Fleming Sr age 59 and his son Marshall Jr age 14 were killed instantly when their car collided with a truck near Canton while returning from a wrestling match. Passenger Frank Cline 29 of Alliance was seriously injured and taken to Mercy hospital Canton. Truck driver C E Weimer of Parkersburg West Virginia was questioned and released.
Attorney James C. Holt for Frederick Snare Corp was told by its New York office to abandon a circuit court action against Sheriff Herbert Evans and Assessor Harry Batson aimed at stopping tax collection. A $1,408.92 payment for first half 1997 taxes arrived to the sheriff, and the case sought an injunction to prevent levy of funds at First National Bank.
Recreation department of the Works Progress Administration sponsors an extensive Christmas caroling program in Grafton and county. J Bernard Dryfield announces. Groups meet at First National Bank building at 10 45 p m for a 15 to 20 minute carol service before touring the city singing Yuletide anthems.
The Panay’s wounded commander reports that Japanese naval planes without warning bombed the gunboat on December 12. Lieut. Commander James J. Hughes says planes flew low to drop bombs as clear weather aided a visible attack, and marks on the Yangtze river craft showed large flags during the raid.
In Berlin Maryland on December 24 a duck perched on a chimney caused smoke. A neighbor shot the bird with a rifle but it fell inside the chimney requiring firemen to remove bricks. The Vickers family will have duck for Christmas.
The DeMolay Commandery No. 11 of Grafton will hold annual Christmas services at noon in the Masonic temple. The event is open to friends and relatives, with State Commander W A Beavers Sr extending season’s greetings. Messages from Mark Norris and grand officials accompany the observance, a 50 year tradition renewing loyalty to the Grand Encampment of the United States. The service coincides with nationwide observances as commanderies join in.
Japanese forces captured Hangchow, the rich Chinese seaport and capital of Chekiang province, by entering all gates simultaneously. The fall came as U S authorities protested a reported insult to Americans amid Japan’s advance over thousands of square miles.
Charleston reports there will be no executive pomp at the governor’s Christmas celebration. A tree stands in the Homer A. Holt home while Julia 12 and Isabel 9 anticipate their first Christmas as the governor’s daughters. The mailman notes increased greeting cards arriving with each mail.
