South Dakota politics are unsettled after the death of U S Senator Peter Norbeck at 66 from heart disease with tongue and jaw cancer. Governor Berry, a Democrat, may be named to fill the unexpired term as Lt Gov Robert Peterson faces resignation amid an embezzlement case. party leaders plan conference with the state chairman.
Mrs Eleanor Gauldin, 25 year old mother of two, was bound, assaulted and robbed in her Chicago hotel room in a latest attack. Central Press.
Havana December 21 The political camp of Cuban President Miguel Mariano Gomez expects his impeachment over a sugar tax bill backed by Col. Batista followers. Opponents forecast at least 115 of 169 House votes in today’s extraordinary session, with a Senate trial likely if impeached.
BUENOS AIRES December 21 The inter American peace conference ended formal labors with approval of 37 projects to strengthen bonds among 21 American republics. A plenary session backed a Central American declaration for solidarity if war threatens the western world, urged lower tariffs and equal trade opportunities, and outlined plans to cement peace and boost commercial and cultural ties.
The 1934 arms embargo act restricting munition sales for use in South American war conflicts was deemed constitutional by the U S Supreme Court. The ruling upholds federal authority to regulate arms shipments amid the Bolivia and Paraguay hostilities.
Snow and ice coated West Virginia highways as sun returned and crews cleared routes. State road commission said major arteries were passable though mountain roads remained hazardous. No weekend road fatalities reported by state police. In Preston County Terra Alta saw the heaviest snow then readings near 12 inches at Kingwood and Tunnelton. Temps fell to 15 in Morgantown before modest rise, with Charleston at sundown under freezing. Fairmont had about five inches of snow.
Newspaperwomen will present off the record skits for about 400 guests at the White House tonight including wives of Grid Iron club members and government officials. Mrs. Roosevelt will entertain the widows while the club lampoons President Roosevelt and Gov. Alf M. Landon during the semi annual stag banquet.
Charleston December 21 The inaugural committee to arrange Governor-elect Homer A Holt and other state officials will be chosen today by General Chairman P D Koontz Governor Kump appointed Koontz to lead the January 18 ceremonies He said no decision yet on outdoor ceremonies or an inaugural ball but a parade will be held
Plans for a museum of surgery to be named the Millicent R. Hearst Foundation were announced by the American Chapter of the International College of Surgeons. Mrs. Hearst will provide part of the funds and a site in New York. The museum will display life sized models and historical surgical materials.
Mrs Lena Stoobe aged 74 died of exhaustion after an all night search in wood near Woodbury New York for a Christmas tree. Police and firemen found her at daybreak with a small fir clutched in her arms.
Reports from Shanghai say General Yu Hueh Chung seized Lanchow and backed Marshal Chang Hsueh Liang after a coup in Kansu province. Police were disarmed, the public safety bureau raided, and pacification headquarters ransacked amid fears of wider rebellion. Continued on age Two.
C R Mettulloch formerly of Mason county and recently disbursing agent for the West Virginia Industrial School at Prunttytown has been installed as financial secretary replacing Elmo Gore who resigned Saturday to become office deputy sheriff in Logan county. Superintendent R P Bell says the job may become permanent with McCulloch holding both posts. Mr and Mrs Gore and family left Saturday for Logan. A farewell party was given for the retiring official Friday night.
Charleston dispatch reports 19 year old Leon Roush will be arraigned on murder charges after he shot his father Lonnie Ray Roush in Kanawha City. State police Sgt Andrew Morgan said the shooting followed the elder Roush beating his wife and driving another son from the home. Witnesses say Leon fired from the doorway.
Grafton and Taylor County join thousands of cities today for a peak Christmas shopping period. Cold weather and a high spirit keep residents upbeat as stores brim with clothing, furniture, toys, and foods. Extra post office trucks and six more workers will handle the holiday mail. Churches held services with special offerings to honor the season.
In Buckhannon on December 21 a 27 year old, Denis Hartman, faces murder charges after Wally White was stabbed during a beer parlor altercation on the Weston Buckhannon road. Officers say White attacked Hartman outside before the fight continued inside.
In Hot Springs Arkansas two companies of the National Guard joined 100 volunteers to search dense woods for two year old Charles Warren who wandered from his father into the cold area ten miles south of Hot Springs. Fears grew he might have perished from exposure as a tense rescue continued.
A French woman pilot injured lightly when her plane crashed in a field near Selsey Sussex police and a doctor visited the scene. The injured occupant, believed to be Mme Marlchester, was taken to a farm nearby, as investigators pursued a cast of suspects and theories. Police withheld her name while a Versailles connection drew attention to a broader mystery.
U S Justice Department frowns on holiday pardons as dozens of states release prisoners for Christmas. Alabama led with 494 freed on a two week leniency, while other states varied from early releases to regular December clemency. Federal prisoners faced opposition from the Justice Department.
The court of appeals ordered a new hearing by the National Mediation Board to determine which Norfolk and Western railway employees qualify to vote for collective bargaining representatives of conductors. The court ruled the board acted arbitrarily in barring emergency conductors from the election.
Vatican officials report urgent medical consultation for Pope Pius XI. Specialists impose strict quiet to aid his weakened condition amid old age illness and high fever possibly influenza. Attendants say there is no hope for recovery, though he may attend Christmas ceremonies.
GH Hedrick of Beaumont recounts being run down on Main Street in front of the Recreation last Tuesday. He initially dismissed the incident and said he was all right after a driver offered help. Six days later his left leg injuries worsen, hampering work, and he hopes the driver will come forward to assist him.
Anthony McNear 45 of Terra Alta shot his estranged wife Pearl McNear 35 in their two room Bridgeport apartment after she refused him $1 for Christmas gifts. He then killed himself, dying eleven hours later in a local hospital from a temple wound and burns when he fell on a stove. Police reported four chest shots were fired into Pearl McNear before the deadly self-inflicted wound. The coroner confirmed the deaths.
Socialist troops held strong positions west of Madrid consolidating a hard fought victory on the Fascist left flank. Defenders strengthened 12 miles along the El Escorial highway toward the Guadarrama mountains after repulsing two coordinated Fascist charges with heavy losses.
The supreme court promised a ruling on the constitutionality of the Frazier Lemke act which grants a three year moratorium on farm mortgage foreclosures. It agreed to pass on an appeal filed by Robert Page Wright of Bedford Iowa from a lower court decision.
Lost in a blizzard, two Army aviators were injured when their plane crashed near Mabie Randolph county. Lieut. Robert J. Koster and Lieut. Marshall C. Hoppin, both from Cincinnati, suffered shock and broken ribs respectively. The radio failed fifty miles south of Elkins amid heavy snow. The plane, from Washington to Cincinnati, was destroyed but did not burn. Farmers delivered the injured to Elkins hospital. A separate report from Salt Lake City notes a $1000 reward for locating the Los Angeles to Salt Lake Western Air Express/Seven missing aboard since Tuesday with nine others, as officials widen the search into Utah Nevada Idaho regions.
The Pacific coast maritime strike nears a potential break as a tentative agreement is sent to sailors union members. Meanwhile 26,000 glass, auto and auto parts workers strike, with talks stalled. Pittsburgh steel workers back Lewis faction to replace company unions, forming the Committee for Industrial Organization with 244 delegates representing 290,000 eastern mills.
