A cold start to the day gripped Grafton with a 7 am reading of 17 degrees at the Blueville station, rising to 25 by late morning as clouds cleared. Yesterday reached a high of 48 with a low of 13, and the forecast promises a warmer, cloudier night and possible rain on Thursday amid strong winds in Northern New England.

Philip Michael Gerkin 42 of 6 Robert Street Grafton died yesterday at 6 p.m. in Grafton City Hospital after ill health. He served as a railway postal clerk at Grafton Post Office since 1955 and earlier worked in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his widow Pauline Poling Gerkin a son three brothers and three sisters. Funeral Friday at 7 p.m. at St Augustine Catholic Church burial Mt Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Knotts Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.
Acting City Police Chief Clyde DeBarr arrested Toni Congi 45 of 11842 Latrobe street on illegal sale of whiskey after a warrant conducted at 1 o clock Sunday morning at the Boosters Club on Latrobe street. Congi posted a 101 dollar bond and is scheduled for police court at 1 30 p.m. Thursday.
Four members of a Glendale family were found dead in a sealed three room apartment Tuesday night after a gas heater burned at full blast, investigators reported.
Chicago police skeptical as Erwin Stand, 32, walks into a station claiming he and other men murdered three boys whose bodies were found in Robinson's woods near Chicago 14 months earlier. Stand says his conscience forced him to reveal details, but detectives question the tale and review a three page statement.

Vice President Richard M Nixon arrived in Austria to view the Hungarian refugee flight. He met 72 refugees from Communist rule and learned about the more than 11,000 already in or en route to the United States under President Eisenhower's plan to admit 21,500 victims of Communist terror. The landing followed fog delays, with Austrian officials awaiting the plane at Schwechat after a delay at Vienna. Hungary seeks a $400 million loan from the free world via the United Nations to avert economic collapse, a move viewed as unlikely from the Soviet bloc and its puppet regime.
H. K. Debendarfer was assured of continuing as supervisor of Division 1 in Taylor County within the Tygarts Valley Soil Conservation District. He ran unopposed in yesterday’s voting held at Keener's Feed Store, with balloting described as light. Eligible voters included individuals firms and corporations owning three or more acres in the county.
Washington staff report a deliveryman and driver pumping 385 gallons of oil into an intake pipe at 2234th St NE after misreading an order for 138 gallons to 2334th St NE. The house, with no oil burner, had an empty tank and a five inch oil puddle spread across the cellar floor, prompting fire crews to mop up as Griffith Consumers corrected the error.
