Kelley cited $218,508.90 in November and a total of $927,019.44 since the first store opened May 9. He said profits would surpass a million by January 1 as December activity grows.
Ashland Kentucky mayor Edgar B. Hager died today after brief illness at age 67. Elected in 1931, his term would have ended January 6, 1936. Born December 12, 1868 in Paintsville, he moved to Ashland in 1881 and was the son of Samuel P. Hager, an eastern Kentucky pioneer.
In Grundy Virginia on December 19 more than 160 children at a mountain mission school are in bed trying to stay warm after a furnace exploded. School sponsors launched a drive to raise 355 dollars to repair the damage.
The will of late Detroit newspaper man and broker Kermit Boise Sr filed in Letcher County Court leaves 732000 estate with 600000 to 11 year old Mary Ellen Taylor if she marries Boise Jr before 21. Boise Jr 24 and engagement broken last year. administrator named Grover Callis.
In Steubenville Ohio three judges will decide on the murder case of 60 year old Joseph Veres who pleaded guilty to killing Mrs Samuel Sechrist 41 mother of three. Samuel Sechrist testified that he heard a shot and saw Veres walking away with a weapon over his arm as the state seeks the death penalty and the court weighs the temporary insanity defense.
Local stores in Grafton report Christmas business up at least 25 percent from last year with weekend peak ahead. Santa Claus appearances drew crowds and spurred brisk toy sales, notably Shirley Temple dolls and electric trains, while post office traffic also rose as merchants gauge holiday demand.
Charleston reports more than 2,000 Kanawha Valley workers will receive Christmas wage boosts from two firms. Age eligibility for Ty garts river dam labor shifted from 21 to 45 and 18 to 48 to recruit workers in Taylor County. National Reemployment Service says efforts fail as notification cards are ignored. 40 workers needed but 80 must be called. Cremer, of Frederick Snare Co, approved the update in a recent conference.
Chicago reports a snowstorm moving east from the Great Lakes sweeping the Midwest. The Weather Bureau predicted the system would reach Indiana and Ohio by nightfall, with cooler air spreading across the northern Great Plains and Minnesota while temperatures remained near normal elsewhere.
A federal court jury acquitted former Governor William Langer and two other North Dakota officials on conspiracy charges. Also freed were R A Kinzer, former relief official, and Frank Vogel, former state highway official, amid the federal relief enforcement case.
Dozens of federal agents hunted the kidnapers of Caleb J. Milne, scion of a textile family found dazed by the road near Doylestown Pennsylvania. Hoover said no ransom was paid and that clues are being traced to identify the abductors as Milne remains under federal care in the hospital. The absence of paid ransom and the partial details fuel ongoing investigations and public speculation.
Police Chief A. E. Lockard warned of swift justice for anyone tampering with outdoor Christmas tree decorations after a blue light globe theft at 218 Yates Avenue. Clyde G. Turner reported the loss, with neighbors unable to identify a suspect, and Chief Lee said officers would crack down to stop such thefts this Christmas.
