Railroads Seek Auto Truck Aid For Short Haul Freight
New York Dec 16 Elisha Lee vice president in charge of operation of the Pennsylvania System says motor delivery trucks will share work with freight trains as railroads divide into wholesale and retail departments. He notes trucks excel in retail, while railroads handle long distance wholesale freight. Pennsylvania Railroad has extended truck service to more than 30 routes, including Pittsburgh Philadelphia suburbs and Maryland shore, replacing two local package trains on the Philadelphia Wilmington line. The shift speeds service, frees heavier equipment, and adds regularity without changing shippers’ arrangements.
