B and O Holly Tree Glowing Yule Landmark in Jackson Md

The B and O holly tree, nearly 50 feet high, will blaze as a festive landmark for rail travelers between Washington and New York during the holiday season. A ceremony on December 18 lights it, with 150 members of the B and O Women’s Music Club and Glee Club performing under Dr James Allan Cash.

Areas of Weston Clarksburg Under Flood Waters

General rains up to three inches in two days left Weston and Clarksburg under flood waters. The West Fork River at Clarksburg stood 15 inches above flood stage at noon and rose further in the hour. Liberty Avenue flooded again around homes, residents staying put as crest expected well short of 8.41 feet.

Firemen Hold Big Affair Here

Four fire departments from Daley Elkins Parsons and Tunnelton members of the North Central West Virginia Volunteer Firemen Association were hosted by the Grafton Volunteer Firemen at the city station. Over 60 people attended the social after the monthly meeting with 20 visiting firemen. The hall was decorated and Dennis Bassett's band played rounds and squares. A baked ham dinner was served by the ladies auxiliary. Nearby departments could not attend due to heavy rains flooding highways.

Chinese reports conflict on 12th army fate near Nanking

Reports from Nanking describe rival claims by the government defense ministry and Communist broadcasts about the 12th army group. The government says the unit escaped encirclement and broke westward, while the Communists claim its remnants were destroyed after 92 days in siege near Pengpu and Suhsien, about 143 miles from Nanking.

Air Lift To Bring GIs Home For Yale

Fort Lewis Washington December 16 A GI wish to fly home for Christmas has grown into an air lift plan to carry about 700 soldiers east for the holidays. Travel agencies report 17 chartered planes with 26 to 50 seats reserved and expect more. Officials say planes will be needed within days as demand rises.

Flash Flood Waters Recede in Taylor County

After midnight flash flooding in Taylor County eased, enabling traffic on primary and secondary roads to resume. Roads including Webster road in Woodford, U.S. Route 50 near Thornton, and State Route 77 near Rosemont faced high waters. Minor slides were cleared, with total rainfall over two days reaching 2.78 inches and 2.04 inches in the prior 24 hours. Temperatures cooled from 62 to 60 degrees as cloudy skies and colder weather were forecast.

Father Booked For Murder Of Railroad Worker

RACELAND Kentucky December report says Sherman McBrayer 34 father of eight released on $8000 bond after being charged with murdering Vincent O Bee 40 a railroad construction worker. McBrayer former Raceland High School coach and Worthington grade school principal claimed self defense when Bee allegedly reached for a weapon as he sat beside Mrs Mildred McBrayer who claimed she had become pregnant. The shooting happened in the McBrayer car after they picked up Bee at his Moorefield West Virginia rooming house and drove away.

Mining Wonder In Operation Now

A $50,000 Joy Mining Co. continuous mining machine is in operation at the Mathies mine 15 miles south of Pittsburgh, digging coal at about two tons per minute. Pittsburgh Coal Co. bought it, unveiled yesterday, with seven other machines in use elsewhere. The device replaces separate cutting, drilling, blasting and loading steps in one continuous process.

Actress Teresa Wright fired by Samuel Goldwyn over publicity duties

Teresa Wright says the five thousand dollar weekly pay is not everything. She was fired yesterday by producer Samuel Goldwyn who called her uncooperative after she refused to travel to New York to publicize a film in which she co stars. Wright claims ill health prevented the trip and says she accepted the firing with relief. She criticizes the contract system as antiquated and urges a new arrangement that respects actors’ privacy and dignity while offering pay options.

Rescue bid for nine U S fliers in Greenland snow

United States air crews equipped with ski planes and gliders plan a perilous rescue of nine U S fliers stranded on Greenland’s snow. Transports towed red tailed gliders from Westover Field Massachusetts and Lt Col F Knut Beaudry will supervise. Six rescued workers include seven stranded after a C 47 crash and two added after a B 17 nose dived. Supplies and heaters dropped, temperatures near zero, crews report the men dug in to escape a fierce storm.

Jurors Acquit Frank Valenti and Kathryn Clark

In Pittsburgh a federal court jury acquitted Frank Valenti, restaurant owner, and Kathryn Clark of conspiring to help Valenti evade military service in World War II. The six men and six women panel deliberated three hours before delivering a sealed verdict. The case involved a claimed fake rape charge against Valenti, which Clark allegedly filed out of spite, though she did not appear to press it. Valenti had previously been tried and acquitted on evading military service via a claimed essential employment status.

Pallbearers Named for John A. Sandor Rites

Bartlett Funeral home announced pallbearers for John A. Sandor Sr.’s funeral at St. Augustine church tomorrow at 8 am. Active pallbearers include Joan Rucker, Dr. Robert F. French destroy Berlin radio towers. station out of air

In Berlin on December 16 Brig. Gen. Jean Ganeval said French forces demolished two radio Berlin towers near Liegel Field after notifying management on November 20. The action ended a four power dispute over the Soviet controlled station in the British sector. Russians posted guards and resisted Western moves to seize control, while the French cited danger to Allied airlift.

Invasion claims tied to Costa Rica uprising

Prisoners at San Jose jail allege that General Anastasio Somoza of Nicaragua pledged full support for an invasion of Costa Rica. Prisoner Sentenced To 60 Days Escapes From Woodford

A prisoner was sentenced to 60 days in Taylor county jail for assault and intoxication after escaping from City Patrolman Huck Woodford’s custody just outside the jail door. Carl Tacy, 18, fled across the South Side footbridge but was later arrested. Several other local cases include a 60 day sentence for drunkenness and assault against Tacy.

Civic Groups To Aid Salvation Army Christmas Drive

The Woman's Club of Grafton and Kiwanis Club will assist the Salvation Army with Christmas collections this weekend. Captain Lynn Wiseman announced that the Woman's Club will oversee the alvation Army flot fles and dime board tomorrow, and on Saturday the Kiwanis Club will take over. Local civic groups to assist next week include the Junior Chamber of Commerce Rotary and Lions clubs.
