Ohio Coal Industry Trials in Wake of Prolonged Strike
Ohio coal mines, hit by an 20 month strike, show production rising to 26 million tons this year while many miners live near poverty and operators report losses. Eastern Ohio shipments top 1926 levels as two thirds of mines operated before Great Lakes season end. Some firms have collapsed or filed bankruptcy, and industry leaders push to win back markets and educate residents to buy Ohio coal. Recovery is hoped within 18 months by optimally consolidating, though freight rates hinder progress.

Four Die As Fire Engulfs Baltimore Paper Plant
A four story plant of the Thomas H. OConnor Waste Paper Company in downtown Baltimore burned fiercely, killing at least four people. Firemen found three bodies in upper stories and another victim died later in Mercy Hospital from a broken back after leaping from a third story window. About 50 workers fled by fire escapes as flames consumed vast quantities of old paper, turning the building into a furnace before aid arrived. The blaze, believed to have started on the fourth floor, spread rapidly, and investigators could not determine the cause. Continuous coverage continued on page seven.
