In Washington a small group of northern Democrats moves to insert stiff wage hour rules for interstate firms. The plan challenges southern opposition as House leaders push ahead toward passage with possible independent board oversight and optional utilities add-ons.
Funeral services were held for two sisters aged 22 and 15 from the Flemington crossing tragedy. Minnie McIntyre Rollins, 23, and Edith McIntyre were laid to rest at Bridgeport cemetery with Rev. Gordon L. Withers officiating. Surviving family includes Archie Rollins and two children. Also mourned were Raymond Butcher, 34, buried in Fork cemetery after driving the sedan hit by B&O No. 92, and David Foster, 20, whose rites were held today with burial at Mt Olive near Philippi.
East Liverpool Ohio December 14 Organized potters of the Ohio Pennsylvania ceramics district announced their anti Japanese boycott plan after a parade of American Federation of Labor workers The National Brotherhood of Operative Potters president James M Duffy said the demonstration makes him confident that labor will adopt the movement and spread it to unions nationwide Continued on page three.
Bitter winter weather disrupted communications and transportation across the British Isles with at least nine deaths. Snow drifts reached 12 feet in Scotland and northern England while fog ice and floods hampered services. Two died of exposure two rail workers were killed four died in an RAF plane crash and a sailor was swept overboard in the Irish Sea. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded.
Twenty six tracts were sold to individual purchasers and 171 to the state at the delinquent tax sale conducted by Sheriff Herbert Evans at the front door of the Taylor county courthouse yesterday. A year ago 41 pieces of delinquent realty were sold to individual buyers, as compared with 26 this year.

A youth described as unusually calm by police murdered Mrs. Wilma V. Carpenter in her Camp Hill home and bound Miss Mary Griffin before attempting to assault her. The attacker fled with money after striking Griffin. detectives pursue leads as the case unfolds.
Morgantown reports 19 year old Jane Greer chosen as West Virginia University's representative at the El Paso Sun Bowl carnival from December 29 to January 1. The Morgantown co ed, daughter of Mr and Mrs H C Green, will attend the three day event and attend the Sun Bowl queen activities while WVU faces Texas Tech. Her parents will accompany her to Texas.
Firemen blamed a gas accumulation for a blast that killed H. E. Roberts, a businessman and former Moundsville councilman, and damaged his palatial home. Mrs. Roberts and Amaki escaped through a rear door. son Joseph, 14, leaped from a window. Roberts was likely injured tending the furnace and succumbed to fumes. damage estimated at 40,000 dollars.
Republican executive committee in St. Louis labors through a long session to screen 600 of 1,000 nominees for a policy committee of 100. National chairman John D M Hamilton rebuts critics as observers name possible chairmen among Dartmouth president E M Hopkins James Truslow Adams and Oregon senator Frederick Steiner.
Charleston December 14 The Christmas shopping rush neared its end with merchants reporting trade equal to or above last year. President George W King of the State Retail Grocers Association noted a solid northwestern tour showing Wheeling Parkersburg and nearby Ohio border towns in recession impact. Banking Commissioner George Ward said banks report active Christmas business and an entirely satisfactory situation with no slumps detected.
PORTSMOUTH O Dec 14 Fifteen hundred sheet mill employees at the Portsmouth works of the Wheeling Steel Corp were dismissed today by General Manager George W Moore who said 23 sheet mills would be abandoned because of obsolete equipment He added in a letter to the employer that new hot and cold strip mills might be added under an improvement program costing many millions of dollars when the present financial situation is much improved but he advised them to seek other employment now About 4500 employes will be required to man the remaining departments here Moore said 6000 employes were on the payroll through most of 1937.
The steamer President McKinley with 453 passengers from the grounded Dollar liner President Hoover neared Manila tonight as the city prepared to aid wreck refugees. Salvation experts from Hong Kong were expected to reach the Hoover, hard aground on a small island off Formosa, tomorrow amid ongoing relief efforts.
Judge Herbert W. Dent calls a special term of Taylor county circuit court for Thursday at 10 oclock morning. The nature of cases to be presented remains undisclosed.
Fifty two survivors of the bombed Panay gunboat moved inland toward the Yangtze with two dead and eight seriously wounded. Awaiting their arrival from Hanshan, naval and Japanese ships stood by at Hohsin to aid the injured. The dead include Charles Ensminger and Sandro Sandri. Many foreigners remain missing and reports say most of the Chinese crew were saved.
Charleston dispatch reports William B. Matthews, former clerk, named acting clerk to succeed W. E. R. Byrne who died of pneumonia. Unofficial notes indicate action pending recovery of President Jo M. Kenna from auto injuries before a permanent clerk is chosen. Matthews to receive regular clerk salary after January 1.
The United States formally protests Japan over the Panay bombing and the sinking of American vessels. President Roosevelt cites demands for formal apologies, full indemnification, and guarantees against future attacks, with Ambassador Grew presenting the note to Japan’s foreign minister.
Tokyo reports Japan accepted Roosevelt's demands on the Panay attack with regret and indemnification. A memo demanding full satisfaction was presented to Emperor Hirohito, showing the government’s readiness to face consequences and prevent a recurrence.
Charleston dispatch reports that West Virginia car owners will pay $120,000 less for fire theft auto policies next year while collision coverage will rise by about $70,000. Japanese army officers promised to search today for three American missionaries missing since December 2 after leaving a Shouyang mission to visit a friend. The Harships of Petersburg West Virginia and Miss Neher of Laverne California are the missing trio. Japanese troops reportedly control Shouyang in east Shansi province.
