Reported at noon in London on December 12 1935 Japan’s bid for naval equality was rejected by four other great naval powers including Britain and its dominions French and Italian opposition noted. The conference broke up as Britain and other leaders withdrew hastily over disputes on limits and rights.
Geneva December reports the Italo-Ethiopian war settlement hopes falter as the League of Nations committee stalls and British French proposals meet with opposition. Rebellion grows against peace plans while King Egypt delays constitutional changes. Halle Selassie rejects British peace efforts amid Med Eastern tensions.
Arthur B. Mayhew of Uvalde Texas will be principal speaker at tomorrow nights Rotary Club meeting at Debendarfer's Cozy Inn. District Governor Lon D Kelly will also attend and address the meeting with remarks.
Arthur B. Mayhew, former Rotary International governor of the 47th district, will be guest of honor at the Grafton Rotary Club meeting at Cozy Rest tomorrow night. A noted organizer in Texas Rotary circles, he helped establish clubs including Avade and served on the international board. Born in 1879 in Wellington Kansas, he later resided in the area.
Havana reports the Cuban council of state and cabinet will meet to elect a provisional president. Quorum rules may be dropped with a majority of attendees choosing a president to serve until January elections. Jose A. Barnet, ex secretary of state and head of government after Mendieta’s resignation, is mentioned for the post.
Walter Liggett, Minneapolis publisher, was assassinated prompting Chief Frank Forestal to ask the U S Department of Justice to take over the inquiry after a conference with federal operatives. Mrs Liggett urged federal involvement, while Attorney General Cummings doubted federal law allowed such a probe. Local officials rechecked the alibi of suspect Kid Cann Rhimenfeld as two state prosecutors studied the publisher s final Midwest American issue.
Washington December 12 plan to unite 8 000 000 Methodists after more than a century of separation was revealed. A judicial council with power to rule on church actions would act like a supreme court. The plan, ratified at Cincinnati, aims to form The Methodist Church bringing together Methodist Episcopal and other branches. Details announced by Dr Harry Woolover secretary of the joint commission on Methodist Union. Church leaders foresee approval after conferences but require ratification by annual gatherings to take effect.
Charleston reports Auditor Edgar B. Sims called the school land commissioner job a racket and ordered each official to provide a full accounting before January 1. He cited that in twelve years the office cost the state 692140.69 dollars, noting the legislature shifted land sale duties to sheriffs and prosecutors.
In Wise Virginia on December 12 Edith Maxwell a 21 year old school teacher asked Judge H A W Skeen to set aside a jury verdict that sentenced her to 25 years for killing her father Trigg Maxwell The defense contends immaterial and improper evidence and lack of instruction on lesser degrees of murder affected the outcome.

A wood working industry may locate in the Elkins district bringing nearly 450000 dollars yearly in wages. Monongahela Valley engineers surveyed possible sites with A C Spurr of the Upper Monongahela Valley Association and E B Smith of Monongahela West Penn Public Service Company. The firm’s name was not disclosed.
Ellis Parker, chief of Burlington County detectives, confirms from European detectives that Isidor Fisch spent part of Lindbergh ransom money in Germany. Fisch paid $200 for a steamship ticket to Europe and later exchanged $600 into reichsmarks for his trip. Fisch, reportedly tied to the Hauptmann case, testified that Fisch gave the ransom money found in the Bronx carpenter’s home. Fisch died of tuberculosis.
WPA administrator F Witcher McCullough of West Virginia asks congression al delegation to favor buying materials for public improvements within the state. A Wheeling firm protested that contracts were awarded to out of state concerns despite equal quality and bids.
Philippi December trial begins for William E. Daugherty a 43 year old farmer and lumber man of Bend-of-the River accused of second degree murder in the death of his 45 year old brother Virgil Daugherty struck by a rock on the brothers property. The case, before Judge William T. George, follows two years of ill feeling between the brothers.
Benjamin Rosen is to recover the $42 seized in a raid on a card game after hiring a lawyer and appealing to the superior court. The judges devoted a day to the case and the court’s total salary expense for that day was $297.
Two young Grafton attorneys vie for president of the Grafton High School Alumni Association. Francis Li Warder and E Bailey Wyckett lead the race with other nominees including Mrs Paul Malone Russell Dotson for vice president, Ada Polsky and Florence Wittman for secretary treasurer, and Mrs Ralph Cline among the five executive members.
Secretary Morgenthau denied the United States halted silver purchases and said he bought the metal daily this week. He stressed continued enforcement of the silver purchase act despite market turmoil in London on Tuesday.
London notes that Lord De Clifford, 28, faced a man slaughter charge from an automobile accident. After a six hour Lords session, the verdict of not guilty was delivered by peers one by one with hands on hearts. The court found no evidence of negligence.
M J Van Sweringen died in a Cleveland hospital after months of illness. O P Van Sweringen was at his bedside. Cause listed as hypertensive myocarditis. Funeral services planned for Saturday at the Van Sweringen residence. burial to be private.
Augusta dispatch reports Rev William B Knox of Andrews M E church will open the annual meeting of the Womans Christian Temperance Union arrangements committee. Attorney James House assisted in planning as officers announced the program yesterday amid local religious activity. Meanwhile a Georgia rail wreck in Dearing killed three trainmen and injured eight others as the Atlanta Augusta line collided head on after a switch was overrun. Rail officials probe cause.
New York reports a teenage victim Carmine Valentino among those injured when a four car I R elevated line work train collision jolted about 200 aboard. Four rail workers were among the injured and observers noted a veteran World War II sailor Mr Holt will speak on world peace at a related event near Pauls M church. (Continued on Page Two).
