Ball of Muncie Ind a banker and glassmaker told senate investigators that in 1935 he bought securities once valued at more than 39 5 million for 3 121 million to rescue the Van Sweringen rail empire from trouble. The stocks were auctioned in New York City as collateral for a 39 5 million loan to late Van Sweringen brothers. Ball testified the 23 000 mile railroad network was under the control of O P Van Sweringen in 1932 and that two financiers may be abolished as hearings proceed.

State police report a youth who held up a taxi near East Bank may be one of three escapees after a gunfight with officers. One of the trio, who robbed banker Paul P. Wilson of $50, was wounded in a front-of-bar fight and jailed in Kanawha County. The youth, identified as Jack Miller of Philadelphia, admitted participation.
