Hardy County appears as the main hunting source with many local nimrods reporting deer taken in the area. C. H. Whitman, J. G. Withers, C. W. Phillips, and T. Haller posted sizable kills in Hardy and Barbour counties, while others from Flemington and Gilmer County contributed notable catches including a 240 pound 17 point buck.
Harrisville officials report nine year old Roger Roberts of Walker Route 2 hunted in Ritchie County with a licensed companion and bagged a small buck at the Deerwalk checking station. Officials say the kill is legal since conducted with a licensed hunter present.
Plans completed for Grafton High School football squad and coaches to travel to Beckley for the State Sportswriters Association victory awards banquet. The 15,000 bearcat gridsters trip departs 8:30 a.m. from the high school in private cars led by Principal Roy W. Walter and coaches Rand J. McKinney Lawrence Spadafore Manfred Shafer and R. J. Hood. Funds raised by Kiwanis Club support the trip with local donors listed. Continuous coverage continues on Page Eight.
The West Virginia State Board Of Control gathers agency requests totaling about 147 million for the 1957-58 budget. Last year the board pared down to 93.9 million with legislature boosts and tax measures. Also discussed were inviting four newly elected board members to sit in on fiscal deliberations.
Leila Nadwocki, the boy's mother, described the public response as overwhelming with about 250 cards. Some included money, while others carried prayers and good wishes for Dale.
Grafton Kiwanis Club members plan to ring doorbells Tuesday to sell light bulbs to raise funds for needy children at Christmas. Dr William Merow, club president, promotes a bag of bulbs for a dollar, offered in three wattages, delivering about 12 percent savings over standard prices while aiding local youngsters.
Harman McGee, a local jeweler of 226 Hatslip Street, is in Grafton City Hospital with a hip wound from a gun discharge believed to have happened Tuesday night after he returned from a deer hunt. Acting Police Chief Clyde De Barr said details are being investigated and will not be disclosed until all facts are known. McGee is not believed to be seriously injured.
A total of 1500 envelopes with Christmas seals of tuberculosis associations were mailed in Taylor County. Funds from the sale aid local and national TB efforts. No return figures available yet. Prank M. Hollis Jr. is the county seal sale chairman.
Russian T 54 tanks and Hungarian police opened fire on several thousand anti government demonstrators massed near Budapest west railroad station. Dozens fell as clashes erupted at Lenin Boulevard around 2 30 p m. Demonstrators fought to reclaim Red flags of Communism while authorities and Soviet forces pursued a hard line against the protests sparked by banned strikes and worker council turmoil.
At the United Nations General Assembly British Ambassador Sir Piers Dixon warned against Soviet influence in the Suez crisis. He said with good faith on all sides the withdrawal timetable for Anglo-French forces from Egypt could be short, and urged Russia to withdraw from Hungary to uphold the rule of law.
Sir Benton W Alexander, 42, shot his wife Nora and her lover Steve Malish to death after finding them together in bed. He was sentenced to 5 to 18 years for second degree murder in the Malish slaying. He faces a second murder indictment for Nora’s death. The killings occurred June 16 in Turner Douglass in a house owned by Malish. Alexander testified of an all night drinking party and an ensuing shooting after waking to find them embracing. Judge Snyder condemned the conduct as known yet condoned.
The White House announced plans to move about 15,000 Hungarian refugees to the United States by year end, with 5,000 aboard naval vessels from Bremerhaven between December 19 and 21 and the remainder by air via Military Transportation Service and private contractors. About 10,000 more are expected by air and sea through early next year, under parole provisions, amid broader immigration policy discussions.
Investigations into blasts at Olin Mathieson Chemical plants left three dead and four injured. A nitroglycerin truck explosion rocked the East Alton, Illinois, facility, with a prior blast at the Niagara Falls, North Carolina pilot site tied to experimental work. One employee, Russell Thrasher of Niagara Falls, was fatally burned. authorities warned details remain uncertain.
