SEA Cites Figures To Prove Stand On School Buildings

Charleston December 6 The State Education Association cites figures from SEA director Sam M Lambert to argue counties cannot fund needed new school buildings. He says needs total 100 000 000 to 150 000 000 with less than 10 percent available under liberal tax rates. The SEA backs state grants for construction with special levies offering a max of about 5 700 000 yearly. Twenty four counties levy but many funds go to current expenses. about half of the levy is not even raised for building. In at least 14 counties the three year excess levy would yield under 50 000, insufficient for a single six room building. See SEA CITES page 3.

Senator O Mahoney argues that corporate profits now and in 1929 were similar in growth but company sizes have increased. He contends that if 1929 profits had been taxed adequately, the government would be in better fiscal shape during the recession. He backs a modified excess profits tax and chairs hearings on business profits with leaders from industry and labor invited to testify on a record 20 billion dollars in profits this year. The Wyoming Democrat notes earnings of the 100 largest firms nearly double 1945 levels as hearings proceed.
