Barn Fire Near Blueville Saved by Owner Efforts
James Latta prevented a large barn fire on his Blueville farm along old Route 50 last evening. Firefighters were alerted at 8:30 but the blaze was stopped near the crib with Latta dousing flames from a reservoir using buckets of water. The fire siren failed to alarm and Latta noted no damage to the cow and significant hay would have burned if the barn had been reached.

Coal union fines threaten massive strike costs
The first two weeks of the walkout could cost the union as much as 10 million dollars monthly to sustain the strike. Individual UMW members face fines up to 800 thousand dollars daily under contract penalties, varying by coal field. Mine owners have sought numerous applications to levy fines, with potential monthly costs between 12 and 24 million dollars if all members are fined. Finances collected go to a medical fund run by the union, while court-imposed fines go to the government.
