Flaming Oil Sweeps Over Waterfront
Flames from the Pratt works of Standard Oil lit the Brooklyn waterfront as a three hour battle fought by land and water containment kept the blaze from engulfing the plant. Over 200,000 gallons of gasoline crude oil and turpentine and 18 storage tanks were destroyed. Piers barges a fireboat and a tanker were damaged as the fiery mass poured into the East River. Protective steps were taken around the Brooklyn Union Gas plant and nearby tenements after a 10 000 gallon crude oil tank exploded spreading fire to other tanks.
