Washington report notes Associated Gas and Electric Corporation as part of a group challenging New Deal utility regulation. The suit, filed in Wilmington, seeks to deem the act unconstitutional. The Securities Commission received the complaint today as the 58nd registered company, Mission Oil of Kansas City, filed late yesterday.
W. Frejan Wilford, a grain farmer from Stavely Alberta, Canada, was crowned wheat king for 1935 at the International Livestock Exposition grain and hay show. His Reward wheat sample weighed 66.6 pounds per bushel, with reserve champion from Tappen British Columbia presenting Durum Mindun grain at 65.4 pounds per bushel.
William Mavin Roman, 39, itinerant worker, goes on trial in Lewisburg West Virginia for kidnapping a six year old girl who is now his wife and mother of his two year old son. His wife aids his defense as the girl, Dorothy Evelyn Bradley, sits with court staff. The defense says she threatened suicide if Roman is convicted and she and the baby have lived with his parents near her own father and mother. The trial opens after jury selection.
Shanghai dispatch reports the Chinese National government deciding to grant north China broad self governing powers. Autonomy in all but name signals a radical reorganization of northern administration to prevent secession from the republic.
Dr James H Breasted eminent Egyptologist and head of the Oriental Institute at Chicago died at Presbyterian Medical Center New York City following a recent illness aboard the Conte Di Sayoia en route from abroad Doctors kept the cause of death confidential while noting an undetermined malady after malaria was suspected earlier The obituary honors his contributions to archaeology and his leadership at the university.
Spencer High School in Roane County faces potential rebuilding after a fire marshal deemed the three story brick building a hazard to life. Superintendent L D Moore said repairs ordered would be impossible to complete. Fire Marshal Fred B Watkins ordered repairs to bulging walls and two fire doors despite limited action.
The Fifth District Federal Reserve Bank reports October and early November time deposits up materially with a slight rise in commercial loans. Retail trade benefited from mild weather but outpaced October 1934 by over 4 percent.
Jesse Livermore Jr. sixteen year old son of the Wall Street hunger battle infection and pneumonia after a bullet wound. Doctors Neville Ussher and Irving Wills say the infection is spreading and the boy’s strength ebbs as he lies in Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara awaiting further developments. The situation follows a drunken quarrel with his mother Dorothea Wendt Livermore.
John Reed, 19, son of J Theodore Reed, a prominent film producer, was reported to be in dying condition after being shot in the head. Reed, a UCLA student, allegedly shot himself, but his father could not explain the act. Surgeons said there was no chance of recovery. The bullet pierced the right temple.
Slippery roads on the Grafton Fairmont road in Taylor county led to a four person injury crash yesterday near McGee. Mrs Artie Ridenour of Grafton and Mr and Mrs Parker A Ridenour of Tumnelton were hospitalized with bruises and cuts, one driver suffered a broken leg, and an unknown occupant was treated for shock. Police could not identify all involved as the Fairmont car with West Virginia plate 188 505 fled the scene. Continued on page three.
Ardelia Johnson and Gus Rucker, both colored, were dismissed by Mayor E Otto Waugh after arraignment on unlawful cohabitation charges in Georgia. They pledged to marry legally and stated they had lived together as man and wife before coming to the city. The mayor warned that continuing to live together would lead to jail.
PARKERSBURG Dec 2 Deputy Sheriff Carl Hughes sought Harvey Woodring 30 for questioning after a man was stabbed at a schoolhouse pie social Elisha Roberts 37 of Elizabeth said Woodring attacked him following a quarrel over Roberts reprimand of Woodrings cousin Aubrey The officer noted the schoolhouse was set afire when the coal stove was knocked over damage was slight.
Elkins December tale reports Sherman Tacy 28 collided with John W. Cur rence 54 Mill Creek chief of police then rammed a vehicle and faced a six months jail term and $25 fines. Other charges include reckless driving and speeding with a high powered flare. E J Blizzard driven car received a $25 fine and a future hearing on the running down case.
The mother of a 16 year old boy in Wise Virginia testified before Sheriff J Preston that the act was self defense after her son killed his father during a brawl. She described her son's actions as protective and said the boy feared for his life.
Grafton volunteers and the Women's club co sponsor a benefit ball at the field house to open the winter social season. Tommy Dorseys Orchestra with Edythe Wright leads a night of music and dancing as West Virginia attendees gather for a 9 PM to early morning event. Funds support fire department equipment. Revocation of the state beer license for Tony's Place on Route 50 roadhouse was issued in Grafton. Francis L Warder notified Tony Olivia and Daisy Olivia that they must surrender the permit to State Tax Commissioner Fred L Fox. Copies were mailed to Prosecuting Attorney J C Holt and Chief A E Lockard. The license, granted to Angelo Olivia last July, had been refused earlier by the tax commission. A hearing was recently held locally.
West Virginia chambers of commerce voted in a U S chamber poll against extending federal jurisdiction into state and local matters. The ballot recorded 27 no votes and 8 yes in response to whether federal power should expand into local concerns. The same vote was attempted for other questions about federal government powers.
At Langley Field Virginia a sergeant and his three children were in their home when a 17-year-old nephew of the wife says he fired only the first shot. The sergeant Clem H. Kelley 38 and his 3 year old son were killed the 8 year old daughter Erene wounded but expected to recover. The youth Buster Russell told investigators he acted alone in an accidental discharge while playing guard mount with the children in the living room last night.
In Hinton authorities jailed a pig after Mrs. Ed Riggs claimed the animal escaped and hid in a neighbor's barn. Police questioned neighbors about the pig and Magistrate E Briers was to be called to settle the dispute. The pig remained in the cell as the debate continued.
