Belgrade reports Marshal Tito proposes negotiating all disputed questions with the Soviet Union to settle the Communist family feud. Observers doubt Moscow will accept an across the table settlement as border shootings and espionage charges heighten strain with Soviet aligned neighbors in the region.
Top Army and Navy leaders testified on the B-26s amid controversy over the Air Force B-36. Gen Omar Bradley and Adm. Louis Denfeld defended or questioned procurement as House members pressed for a 536 purchase inquiry. Secretary of Defense John Kenneth represented the department in the hearing.
Two tropical hurricanes roiled the Atlantic, spaced over 1,000 miles. One was 125 miles south-southwest of Cape Hatteras with warnings along a 45 mile coastal stretch from Manteo to Cape Lookout as it moved north at about 15 miles per hour. The second cyclone intensified near 100 miles northeast of St Thomas and tracked northward, likely curving to the north-northeast later today.
Clyde and Mrs Clyde Satterfield of Route 5 Grafton pursue better living by restoring an 89 acre farm. The Navy veteran enrolled in the veterans on the farm program and works with County Agent Ralph Fike Soil Conservationists and University Station to test field corn hybrids in plots and run strawberry variety trials. Contour strips and a diversion ditch manage surplus water while ongoing trials aim to boost profits and farming methods.
Bids on contracts for about 2000 blankets for use at state institutions will be opened September 6. State purchasing department director Carl Riggs said one contract would be awarded for all wool blankets, and another for blankets 80 percent wool and 20 percent rayon.

Lycurgus Spinks, a former Baptist minister described as a fiery orator, is selected to lead a new union of Ku Klux Klan robes. He is enthroned as Imperial Emperor, aiming to unite Klans from six states under a single organization.
West Virginia Supreme Court Judge W. T. Lovins was hospitalised in Sudbury Ontario with a broken wrist and ankle after a fall at a Thor Lake camp. He, his wife, and their son Walter of Charleston had vacationed at the camp for three weeks and were to depart for West Virginia the previous night.
The credentials committee urged the Democratic National Committee to expunge five members who bolted to the States’ Rights banner last year. The motion targets officers in Alabama and follows a Philadelphia convention split.
Caplans Jewelers and the Manos Theatre plan a novel stunt in Grafton this Friday. Two planes will drop prize handbills over the city carried by Miss Mary Moscar and Miss Eldora Bolyard with their pilots, offering 250 passes to the New Manos theater for either matinee or evening shows.

Washington reports the House voted to take a 25 day recess from Friday through Sept 21 noon. Only scattered noes appeared as the voice vote passed. The bill goes to the Senate for approval before the House can begin its vacation, though the Senate has no recess planned.

Secretary Johnson announced 135,000 civilian layoffs to cut defense costs. Congress members warned districts would suffer, while some urged trimming nonessential civilian positions. Johnson defended the plan as ensuring one dollar of defense for every dollar spent.
The Public Service Commission approved ending three daily passenger runs between Richwood and Laurel Creek in Nicholas County. Balti more and Ohio Railway cited losses of 20540.66 in 1948 and 10209.62 in five months of 1949, noting the services were temporary since 1944 for coal miners and that a taxi option could serve school children, despite opposition from the Nicholas County Board of Education.
Alfred and Edna Birnbaum won a house on display in Manhattan with a 50 cent ticket. They faced land, moving, and installation costs plus $50 daily parking rent. They sold the house for 1500 dollars to lawyer Herbert Braasch who plans to relocate it to Port Washington, Long Island.
The Grafton Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks contributed 213 to the Camp Towles swimming pool fund, bringing total contributions to 1,500. The lodge pledged ongoing support for Taylor county’s youth camp and discussed future improvements with the Camp Towles advisory committee.
