US and South Korean forces repel a wedge of about 50,000 Reds massed for an all out Taegu assault. Allied regimental commander warns fate may be decided within 48 hours as both sides pour in men. Heavy artillery and Pershing tanks bolster the defense amid continual road clearance.
The Taylor County Fair aims to be the best yet with preparations underway. A professional horse and pony pulling act, flying trapeze, and high dive routines promise thrills, while vendors and exhibits draw Taylor County folks. See you at the fair next week. it should be well worth attending.
Taylor county 4 H Leaders association sponsors the county fair 4 H King and Queen election with six boys and six girls chosen for outstanding club work. Votes will be cast by pennies at the fair, and the top male and female will be crowned on closing night.
Next Tuesday marks the opening of the 1950 Taylor county fair at noon at Graf ton fairgrounds. A record crowd is expected to visit four commercial exhibit tents, two livestock tents, the Senior high school field house with 4-H FFA and FHA displays, plus the B and G midway and Hollywood acts. Exhibits must be registered by Monday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and all displays must remain until Saturday night. Saturday is 4-H day with livestock clothing vegetable dairy and food contests and a junior livestock showmanship contest.
Charleston reports seventeen new polio cases last week raising the yearly total to 180 for the period. Kanawha and McDowell counties each logged four cases with three in Fayette county. A 13 year old Carol Jount dies at Mortis Memorial Hospital. Milton Label county records its first death this year. Mercer county records two new cases Gaylon Petty of Princeton is third polio victim this town. Vera Ruth Walker, three, of Fivefield, is another new case.
Parliament members travel to Ottawa amid an emergency session as Canada faces a nation-wide railway strike of 124000 workers that began yesterday. In the United States, Trainmen and Conductors unions press a five day warning strike at five Midwest lines and terminals, with no nationwide stoppage planned for now.
This morning three men appeared in City Hall before Judge J Guy Allender after arrest by constable and patrolmen. Dunioy Mennar of Grafton was fined $10 and cost for intoxication with time to pay. Ralph Sapp of Independence Route 1 was fined $20 and cost which he paid. A warrant was issued for Sapp upon complaint by Marvin McCartney of Grafton. Sapp was brought to Grafton for trial. John Doe of Grafton was charged with causing a disturbance and pleaded not guilty, trial continued until tomorrow at 9 p m.
Dover reports two more persons attempt the English Channel today as yesterday’s finishers face lingering issues. Under British rules, prize money cannot be taken out of the country, and sponsors admit they did not consider money angles in the race.
Maryland police say they expect to arrest the diver of a hit run truck that killed 54 year old Raymond F. Litten of Sleepy Creek West Virginia. Litten was struck on U S Route 40 near Hancock, Maryland and died of a broken neck in Hagerstown hospital. Also notes West Virginia has a cigar loving congressman John Kee of Bluefield on his 76th birthday with cigars. Kanawha county schools face 15000 mmnor vandalism cost. plans for a new consolidated negroes school in Brooke county. state bill to extend synthetic liquid fuels program funding to 82 million plus two point six million for Morgan town research. licensing board announces 40 new WV doctors. WVU poultry farm to add a new brooder house.
Returns from yesterday’s primary elections show upstate New York Republicans Clarence Kilburn and Sterling Cole renominated, Brooklyn Democrat Louis Heller advances, but Joseph Pfeifer loses to a newcomer after 16 years in office. In Mississippi, Arthur Winstead leads the Democratic field and John Williams stands as a sure winner, while Wyoming Republicans back Frank Barrett for governor.
Four West Virginians are listed as missing in action and three as wounded in the Korea casualty report. The missing are Corporal Lee Hill of Garten Fayette county. Private First Class James Persianni of Crumpler McDowell county. Corporal Howard Rinks Junior of Wheeling. and Private Charles J. Wolfe of Wallace Harrison county.
The Taylor County school year 1950 51 will begin September 6 for all county pupils. Holiday dates include November 7 election day, Thanksgiving on November 23 24, Christmas break December 21 January 1, and Easter vacation March 22 26. Second semester starts January 22 and school concludes May 31 1951. County principals meeting August 31, and workshops for beginning and certified teachers set at Grafton High School September 1 2 and September 5.
Three fines were levied yesterday in the court of vu P. Lucas. Philip D. Sanders of Clarksburg paid 10 dollars and costs for failing to keep his vehicle under control. Alfred L. Poling faced a 25 dollar fine and costs for speeding in a 25 mile per hour zone in Parksville. Lawrence W. Tingler was fined 25 dollars and costs for speeding in a 25 mile per hour zone in Pruntytown. Mr and Mrs Theodore Mc Cracken of Route 2 Grafton welcomed a baby girl weighing six pounds ten ounces at 8 55 p m in Grafton City hospital.
Emanuel Maschetto, 63, was found guilty of stealing one can of soup and one can of condensed milk. Police recovered $6,886 from his pockets, with no explanation offered for the amount. The incident reflects a meal theft by the defendant in Angeles Yri-a.
