British Offensive Advances North of Ancre River

London reports a wide front British attack north of the Ancre launched this morning with satisfactory progress. British forces have captured Courcelles Achiet le Petit Moyenville and Beaumont sur l Ancre area, advancing two to three miles over a fifteen mile front from Moyenville to Beaumont sur Ancre.

British Third Army launches surprise attack in France

General Haig leads a dawn offensive across ten miles from Arras to Albert amid haze and smoke. German seized trawler raises raider fears

At Atlantic Port on August 21 a formal submarine seized the big fishing trawler Triumph. The crew reached shore safely and said Germans intend to use the trawler as a raider. The U boat harassed fishing vessels on the Grand Banks and placed an armed guard aboard. The Triumph's crew reported the ship afloat and no sinking preparations were made. The Triumph is owned by North Atlantic Fisheries Company and is among the fleet's best boats.

Fatal mine explosion kills two brothers in Lillian

Aurist Williamson aged 18 and Orin Williamson, both brothers, died after a powder explosion in an Ohio West Virginia Coal Company mine at Lillian. A burning lamp ignited powder cans flooding the mine with flame. Orin is critically injured, Aurist died en route to hospital. Funeral director Bartlef took charge, bodies sent to their home in Lillian. Superintendent from the mine accompanied remains.
