In Taylor County a mass meeting of the Taxpayers Association reviewed committee reports on reducing county levies under a constitutional amendment. The county court was urged to audit outstanding bills totaling about 58,000 dollars before approving new taxes, with proposed levies adjusted or eliminated pending audit.

Dr Alfred D Simpson presents the report with committee members from New York Massachusetts and Washington. It urges immediate state support as tax delinquency unemployment and reduced property values threaten education funding.
Leavenworth Kansas Aug 19 Thirteen convicts from the federal penitentiary annex were held in solitary confinement after riots tied to discipline tightening linked to the Terry Druggan expose. Windows and bunks were broken, guards were pelted, and reserves and extra officers quelled successive disturbances in wing six.
Winthrop Rockefeller, 21, son of John D. Rockefeller Jr., travels from Houston to Fort Worth and New York with an armed guard and federal agents on duty. He shows little concern about kidnapping risks while stopping in Chicago en route to Boston and New York.
In South Bend Indiana on August 19 six residents of Wakarusa and nearby counties were killed and ten injured when a truck converted into a motor bus carrying them home from a Chicago world’s fair outing wrecked after a collision. One side collapsed as the bus careened into a ditch, leaving bodies and wounded along the road for hundreds of feet.
James Gray a Cleveland mechanical engineer unemployed for months was found fatally stabbed on a Euclid street. A large hunting knife with two fingerprints and a detective novel lay nearby. Mrs Gray said he left yesterday for Ashtabula with friends seeking work. Gray was a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society and formerly a designer for Consolidated Expanded Metal in Wheeling West Virginia.
Ripley and nearby records show deputy Shoff Shamblin and prisoner Ralph Harper slain in a running gun battle. Frazier testified his aim was to kill Harper and had no plan to hurt Shamblin. The jury is to hear final instructions and deliberations today as Cano’s case moved to a second trial.
Weather outlook for the week begins Monday in the Ohio valley and Tennessee with local thundershowers early Thursday or Friday. Temperatures stay mostly normal, slightly cooler in the north around Wednesday.

In Pittsburgh on August 19, 1100 miners at the Library shaft of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ended a walkout after Elmer F. Andrews NR A mediator mediated a dispute over hiring. Helmick, a brakeman suspended after an accident, was rehired following talks with William Phillips general superintendent. Workers will return to work Monday.
Four persons died and two were critically injured when a Wabash train struck an automobile at a street crossing in Fort Wayne Indiana about 3:30 am. The crossing watchman said the car occupants ignored signals and drove into the train’s path.
Benjamin Thaw Sr., a 74 year old Pittsburgh banker, died at home. He was the father of World War ace Col William Thaw of the Lafayette Escadrille and half brother to Harry K. Thaw. He and brother Kiam Jr. organized the Hecla Coke Company, later absorbed by H C Frick Coke in 1905. He also served as trustee for his father William Thaw's estate and the Cox trust.

Chicago dispatch reports Mrs. Alice Covelli shot herself over jealousy about her husband's attentions to another woman, then remarried Daniel Covelli at a hospital license office in a ceremony witnessed by four nurses, internes, a physician, and a priest. The bride later died on the hospital bed.
