Athletes from Communist dominated eastern Europe who came to Britain for the Olympics are exploring ways to remain. Five men from Czechoslovakia and Hungary, plus several Yugoslavs and Poles, have announced plans to stay or consider emigration to the United States or Canada. A Hungarian squad member is among those staying, while Czech gymnasts will remain for the funeral of a deceased teammate.
The Israeli army said Arab snipers fired on Jewish traffic on a Judean mountain road two miles west of Jerusalem amid the heaviest fighting since the UN truce began four weeks ago. Both sides blamed the other as skirmishing spread across Jerusalem with mortar and heavy machine gun fire heard around the area.
A Pennsylvania passenger train collided head on with a freight train near North Robinson eight miles east of here. Thirteen people were injured and taken to Crestline Hospital. The westbound passenger train was reported carrying soldiers.
The Junior Order of United American Mechanics starts its 80th annual state convention in Parkersburg on Thursday, with meetings planned through Saturday.
Alger Hiss agreed to testify in closed session before the House committee the plan aimed to have Hiss and Chambers face each other for the first time since disclosures. Chambers, Time editor, testified about his Communist past and urged Hiss to confess. The clash could shape the House inquiry into alleged Soviet espionage.
Charles P. Kreckel, 58, of 458 Pearl Street, was arrested by city police on Main Street in the business district at 10 30 Saturday night. He was placed in Taylor County jail and posted 51 bond for appearance before Municipal Police Court Judge Guy Allender tomorrow. Patrolmen Messenger, Snider and Moran reported Kreckel was driving a 1941 Oldsmobile. The remainder of the city police docket for the weekend can be found on page 3.
In Grafton a 12 year old boy crawled into a dark Main street sewer to save a stranded puppy. City workers held a rope at his waist as Jimmy Martin 12 of West Knotts avenue entered the manhole and freed the frightened dog before dawn.
Pravda accuses Lt. Robert Dreher of the U.S. naval attache’s office of accepting secret military information from a Soviet official and being hustled from the government. The paper says both men confessed, amid indications that Western envoys will resume Kremlin talks on East West crisis.
New York Aug 16 Babe Ruth remains on the critical list at Memorial hospital center for cancer and allied diseases with no significant change in his condition since yesterday. He sat up briefly and spent a comfortable night, while a strong police detail guarded the scene. A separate update reports Mrs Oksana Stepanovna Kosenkina still in critical condition at Roosevelt hospital after leaping from the Soviet consulate, with slight improvement and further X rays planned.
President Truman forecast a 1.5 billion dollar deficit next June sparking GOP charges that he juggled figures for political gain. Republicans say the treasury will show a 5 to 6 billion dollar surplus, leaving room to cut taxes and reduce debt. Truman blames an ill timed 5 billion tax cut and notes spending near a-peacetime 42.2 billion, with a 1.5 billion deficit and potential deficit financing even if numbers are adjusted.
The Grafton Junior Chamber of Commerce will stage its Turtle Derby at Grafton High School Football Field on Labor Day September 7 at 3 30 pm. Last year’s turnout exceeded 100 entries and over 1 000 spectators attended the event for the past three years. The derby follows the gigantic fire department parade as a kickoff to Jubilee Week with prizes for local entrants and sponsors. more than 75 visiting departments expected.
Doris Tennant Wilson 40 of Fairmont was found on the Tygart Valley River banks four days after drowning at Valley Falls. Andy Biddle discovered the body and notified authorities. Funeral services were held at 10:30 am at a Fairmont funeral home with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Wilson, a Westinghouse employee and mother of one, was with friends when she fell over the falls while wading above them. Her son, Robert Gene Wilson, serves in the U S Navy at Guam.
A blaze in a false-fronted building in Reno on August 16 caused a blast that killed the fire chief of a nearby city and four others, left one missing and 137 injured among hundreds of spectators. Officials ruled no dynamite. damage estimated about 100000 dollars.
In Ormond Beach Florida sheriff says a Georgia stenographer and a Kentucky man were killed on a desolate beach. The sheriff theorized two slayers were involved and described them as sex perverts on the prowl. Rewards totaling $1000 were offered for information.
Lewisburg WV fair opens with hundreds of exhibits and features to lure visitors. Officials estimate 15 000 to 20 000 people attended yesterday, exhibitors with livestock flowers vegetables and home canned goods. Industrial building drawing crowds tomorrow racing track thrill drivers midways set up. Horse show entries came from West Virginia Virginia Ohio Kentucky Tennessee.
The eastbound Cincinnatian was not delayed yesterday afternoon. A Baltimore and Ohio wreck crew toiled for two and a half hours re railing the outbound engine after it jumped the rails east of the B and O station near the Bridge Street bridge during a swap. The outbound engine could not be attached to the eastbound train, so another locomotive was substituted and service ran on schedule.
In Savannah Georgia a five year old boy kept a four day vigil over his mother who shot herself in her bedroom. County coroner Harold Smith said Marion Anderson appeared to have killed herself on Wednesday. Friends found her Saturday night as the boy lay across the bed with a fly swatter in hand to guard his sleeping mother. He had eaten food from the ice box while alone in the house. Mrs Anderson was the wife of a merchant seaman on the Pan American ship.
West Virginia American Legion delegates at Huntington call for a state bonus for World War I and World War II veterans. A resolution seeks a constitutional referendum with no fixed amount, estimating about 190,000 World War II veterans could be eligible. Donald R. Wilson, 22 veteran of World War II, elected commander of the Legion’s third district and succeeds W. R. Fugitto.
A weather summary notes yesterday reached 80 degrees at mid afternoon and 53 at night. Today the mercury rose to 81 by high noon after an 8 am reading of 67. The forecast calls for cloudy days ahead with increasing humidity.
Four more Czech Olympic athletes decided today against returning to Communist ruled Czechoslovakia, bringing to at least eight the number who will not go back. The Czech refugees committee withheld names fearing reprisals. two Czechs are swimmers and four are rowers. Two Czechs have already applied for permission to remain in England, while two Hungarian swimmers are said to be playing in England with permission. The Hungarian committee called them not refugees but two adventurous young men seeking professional swimming work. Dessa Gyarmati returned to Budapest after Home Office permission to stay.
Attendance at the Great Lilly Reunion grounds exceeded 30,000 as speakers denounced Soviet Russia and communism. Mrs. E. Wyatt Payne led the opening assault asserting America failed to stop communism in homes, schools, churches, and government. The program closed the two day family gathering with a strong political address.
