Police probe the double death of Mrs. C. A. Nash 45 and her 14 year old son Burton in Davenport Indiana. The bodies were found after the father a light and power executive returned from Omaha and reported the scene to authorities seeking clues to the killer.
Grafton voters backed a municipal hospital plan with a large majority, approving both the levy extension and bonds. City leaders plan to form a site committee using WPA workers, aiming for a spring completion and noting a $125,000 grant for Gratton’s facility.
Moorefield August 10 Sheriff W H Warden Hardy county says Austin Copeland former WPA worker was being questioned at the county jail regarding the fatal shooting of William Combs on the porch of his store at Wardensville early Sunday. Warden believes Combs, who had been sleeping in the store since a burglary weeks earlier, was shot about 4 am.
Rus sell Goodwin 41 of Fairmont is jailed on murder charges after an estranged wife Mattie Gurty Goodwin 40 died from deep cuts after a quarrel at their home. Deputy Yanero said she died shortly after admission to a local hospital.

In Raleigh county the Armory precinct tally reveals 289 Democratic votes though only 259 Democrats are registered. Republicans cast 29 votes and F ag stakes Big Gain E Pansons gains 102 votes across four reevaluated precincts, leaving him 97 votes ahead of A D Preston in the House of Delegates race.
The West Virginia Baptist assembly elected Rev. C. B. Cavverlee of Sistersville as president. Other officers include Rev. James E. Fidler of Parkersburg as dean and Rev. Clarence Figgatt of Mt. Hope as assistant dean. The assembly closes Friday.
Del bert Farnsworth, known as a frequent offender, was sentenced Wednesday to four days work on the city streets after pleading guilty to a charge filed by city police. The arraignment occurred in municipal court before Mayor P. F. Gillispie on Tuesday afternoon.
Spanish government troops widened a front at Baláguer and Lerida in Catalonia crossing the Segre river to establish a new line on the west bank. It marks the third hammer blow in two weeks against Francisco Franco's forces along the eastern front. The initial aim was the Balaguer bridge recapture.
The Supreme Court refused to review a Harrison county circuit court ruling that E. L. Simpson, a Democrat, won the Clarksburg seventh ward city council seat. Republican Paul McKinney, whose bid to oust Simpson was heard by the city council as the counting board, had appealed the decision.

Deputy Sheriff Enoch White, 46, was killed and his assailant Elda Roberts, 24, wounded after a reported disturbance at Roberts’ home in Wyoming County. Sheriff F. Byrd said White and Constable Alda McKinney went to the scene to investigate a whiskey trouble and were fired upon as White attempted to confront the shooter. The motive remained under investigation as officers searched the surrounding hills for possible answers.
Lincoln, Aug 10. Governor R. L. Cochran widened his eight to one lead in Nebraska’s primary as returns from 1,453 Democratic precincts showed Cochran with 75,564 votes to 10,603 for his nearest rival. All five incumbent congressmen seeking third terms led at the halfway point with more than half of precincts counted.
In Winchester Virginia police credit Mrs. James M. Marsh with saving two boys from a burning truck after her car collided with it. She smashed the windshield and pulled Paul Ramsburg of Capon Bridge West Virginia and Bursey Baker's son of Clear Spring Maryland to safety, leaping from the seat beside her own child to aid. The collision followed Baker attempting to pass on the left after his attention shifted to his son.
President Roosevelt travels toward Warm Springs Georgia to address the Barnesville rural electrification project and to meet candidates for the state senate nomination. U S district attorney Ward Lawrence Camp and Senator Walter F P George are among rivals invited to attend.
Seventy-year-old Jim Saul died when a motorcycle ridden by his 26-year-old nephew Paris Saunders struck him on a road near Bluefield. Miss Mildred Shrader of Goodwin, riding tandem, was severely injured. Sheriff Crumpecker questioned Saunders and released him.
Aug 10 report from Charleston says Emma Wilkinson a 33 year old mother who was badly injured in a highway crash that killed her infant daughter died in hospital. The incident occurred along Coal River road near Blooming Rose three days earlier.
W. R. Lunk of the West Penn System urged Grafton business leaders to speak positively rather than negative, during a Tuesday dinner at Debendarfer’s Cozy Rest Inn. He predicted a boom within the next 90 days, saying the city is not through and that improvement hinges on constructive talk.

Protestants opposing the Monongahela railway request to discontinue passenger service in West Virginia were granted 10 days after receiving the full hearing record to decide on continuing their protest. The Public Service Commission heard the company cite a five month 1938 loss of 4265.86 in West Virginia to justify the cut. Fairmont and Morgantown business groups and locals protested the plan to end the daily Fairmont Brownsville Pa train.
In Tazewell Virginia Frank Glovers a filling station operator was arrested for questioning in the death of Harry Bo Wheeler 26 of Bishop Wheeler in grave condition with extensive slash wounds was found along the Tazewell Bishop road early Saturday Wheeler daughter and wife named Glovers as a possible attacker on his deathbed according to Carl Gillispie commonwealths attorney
A community luncheon event titled Baked Ham Luncheon will be held at the M. P. Church this Thursday in August. Residents are invited to attend for a meal and fellowship.
Francis M. Carroll former deputy sheriff took the stand seeking an alibi to prove innocence in the murder of Dr. James G. Littlefield. Paul N. Dwyer, 19, the state's star witness, had pleaded guilty and is serving a life sentence. Defense list totals 36 witnesses. Barbara Carroll is not named on it.
Don McKee of Fairmont was sentenced to 10 days in county jail after being arraigned before Mayor P F Gillisple. He was seized during the hospital victory parade and had caused a nuisance on Main Street by panhandling and using profane language when requests for money were refused.
Harry C. Compton, chairman of the Hospital Campaign Committee, thanks voters for approving the hospital proposition by a five to one margin. He calls August 1938 a new era of goodwill and civic advancement and credits city commission, Board of Trade, campaign team, volunteers, and supporters for the victory.
