City officials corrected an overstatement of the current year budget increase from 41 791.1 to 11 791.13 due to a missing 30 000 tax component. City manager Harry Curry said the boost rests on proposed package tax revenue. without it the 1949 50 revenue would fall by 13 209.
Charleston WV Morgantown Rotary Club heard Virginia university pathologist Dr M M Hobbs urge replacing coroners with a medical examiner system for violent deaths He faulted coroners for lacking qualifications authority funds and record keeping He estimated annual system cost at 25000 to 30000 dollars
Dr B V Blagg of South Charleston tells Insurance Commissioner Crichton that a proposed uniform hospital service contract discriminates against general practitioners. He notes the plan requires hospitals to have five beds to participate, granting hospital service associations excessive power.
Gough Ridenour asked the Sentinel to express thanks to all Taylor County residents who worked for his nomination and voted for him in last Tuesday's primary. A special grand jury indicted Barboursville State hospital superintendent Mrs. Virginia Comstock on manslaughter and assault charges over Miss Pauline Cook’s death last June. Cook died at Huntington State hospital days after transfer from Barboursville, with assault claims citing a large undiluted narcotic dose. The jury acted after the hospital board of Control fired 14 staffers amid criticism. The board's resolution faulted supervision and staffing. board president Burdett defended the hospital’s operation since 1949.
A Marine transport plane carrying ammunition crash landed near Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City after an engine failure during instrument approach. The crew escaped unharmed as a fire and successive explosions raged for hours, witnessed by nearby resident D A Dodson three miles away.

Roy Sutter of Denison Texas attempted the English Channel crossing as the season opened but suffered a leg cramp after about 90 minutes and was picked up by an escort boat near Dover England.
California Governor Earl Warren said on radio that while Korea is a perceived foe the real enemy is Soviet Russia He warned against hysteria but urged vigilance and noted the nation is not secure in a dangerous world
Two Grafton residents appeared in city court this morning and each paid a $10 fine plus costs. Lloyd Duckworth was arrested on patrol street for intoxication and Fawin Gray for having an improper license plate. Both fines were settled before Judge J Guy Allender.

Charleston West Virginia reports the Republican nominee for state treasurer remains undecided after last Tuesday's primary. Official canvasses in Braxton Barbour and Fayette counties show Hal Morris of Charleston leading Louis Reed of Elizabeth by 966 votes in unofficial tallies from 2,813 precincts. Twenty nine precincts are missing and could sway the result.
Dean Rusk, assistant secretary of state, told a Blacksburg audience that Russia will not block the United Nations from checking aggression. He cited Lake Success veto tactics and warned that if the Security Council is vetoed, the General Assembly will move to act, swiftly filling the vacuum.
