Order Glavis Restored to Civil Service

Washington Aug 4 President Roosevelt restored Louis R Glavis to civil service status by executive order to remedy an injustice. Glavis, dismissed by Taft in 1908 after exposing irregularities in Alaska coal lands, became chief of the Interior Department investigation division. The case involved the Morgan-Guggenheim syndicate and others seeking coal land through dummy entrymen violating the law. The Interior Department cited Ballinger and Taft's support of his dismissal, while a later committee backed Ballinger. Fisher later reversed this, canceling Alaska coal entries.
