One miner killed in a brush between pickets and deputies. Beset by violence, the state acts to restore order while planning a peace settlement.

A terrier in the Overlook area of the Bertron estate led police to the body of Mrs. Samuel R Bertron 67 at a shallow lake on the property. Police said the cause of death could not yet be determined. Mrs Bertron dined with her banker husband earlier and walked with her airedale. The dog tugged at the butler’s trousers and directed staff to the pond where the body lay.
The state board of education reopened the question of changes in school textbooks in Charleston on August 2. Representatives from book companies said the law requires changes. Attorney General Homer Holt advised at the meeting. The board previously warned county boards that state aid would be withheld for unauthorized changes. No decision was reached and more items remained on the calendar for a possible session tomorrow.
Washington August 2 The proposal to change the name of West Virginia has drawn mixed reactions in Washington Some favor a more distinctive name to boost national standing while others deem it a disservice to the state's history In Beckley West Virginia representative and locals voice both pride and support for or against the change with discussions continuing.
Richmond Virginia George C. Perry, chairman of the state corporation commission and former congressman, built a commanding early lead in the Democratic primary for governor as more than half the precincts reported. With 934 of 1685 precincts in, Perry had 54 040 votes, while Joseph T. Deal of Norfolk had 13 455 and State Senator W Worth Smith Jr 14 826.
Romanian women form a branch of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women in Washington with Princess Alexandrine Cantacuzene as president.
Washington August 2 600 business leaders were drafted by President Roosevelt to push the national recovery program. Hugh S Johnson recovery administrator announced the drive to recruit nine members from 48 state committees and seven from 26 district boards to enlist patriotic Americans employers and consumers. Johnson warned swift action against code violations especially in textile mills and said he would act to the maximum of the law if needed.
In New Orleans on August 2, 15 election commissioners faced fraud charges filed by the district attorney over alleged false returns on constitutional amendments linked to the Huey P Long faction. The dispute involved a recount push and a parish grand jury request to destroy ballots.
Tulsa reports Sinclair Prairie marketing Empire pipeline and Continental units cut schedules 13 cents to 62 cents a barrel. H F Sinclair of Consolidated Oil cites failure of Standard Oil New Jersey and Indiana to meet July advance as cause for his company’s secession from the price rise effort.
Charleston Aug 2 An engineering plan outlining close supervision for road work was presented to county road supervisors preparing to assume new duties. Governor Kump Road Commissioner Bailey and Mortimer W Smith outlined a system where state supervisors report to the state engineering force. Each district engineer will command a district maintenance engineer and several assistants who oversee supervisors and advise on materials.
Fairmont August 2 Three fourths of WV snakes are shown in an educational exhibit by State College biology's new Science Hall. The display aims to dispel snake superstitions and features turtles frogs lizards spiders fish plus student made aquaria bird nests bird houses and bird feeding stations.
The West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in Lake Maryland announces a 15 percent wage increase and a shift to a 40-hour workweek. Two departments began this schedule, with full implementation by August 21. A 10 percent raise had been issued July 24, bringing the total to a 25 percent rise. About 25 new workers were hired, with more anticipated as departments convert.
Jerome Rykosky city clerk of Benwood was named prison clerk at the state penitentiary and Clarence Stone of New Martinsville was appointed deputy warden Warden McClintick said he learned of his own appointment after a Moundsville job hunter asked for work.
Arthur Byron nine was located asleep on a porch a block from his Philadelphia home after police firemen and Boy Scouts searched streams and woodlands four days after he disappeared. He said he spent most time within one block of home and had visited relatives in Clifton Heights last Thursday. His mother Mrs Romeo Byron collapsed when officers returned him home. The boy added he had been hungry and bought food in a grocery store.
A F Whitney president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen announced a meeting of the railway labor executives association to discuss a national code for railroad workers. The gathering, set for tomorrow, aims to address complaints that railroads are not following the President's program and are instead cutting employment.
In New Rochelle New York two men wanted for murders in Charleston West Virginia were held in East View county jail pending extradition. Leo Frazier 30 of Charleston and Charles Harper 23 of Huntington were ordered held after Judge Richard Leo Fallon ruled they were fugitives from justice Harper said he would waive extradition and return.
The county court set maximum levies to meet current fiscal needs, totaling 60,507.91 for the general fund. Valuations by class show grand totals at 20,070,050 with real estate and personal property breakdowns. 13 rural schools are eliminated, and county road levies fixed at 25 cents.
Four year old Dale Robinson Jr. was fatally struck by a car driven by former Circuit Clerk Lawrence A. Cather in Fairmont last evening. Witnesses said the boy darted into the street. Cather, facing embezzlement charges, stopped and took the child to a local hospital where he died minutes later. The family, from Kingwood, had been visiting. The body was later sent to Kingwood for funeral services.
Public notice states barbers and beauticians sign an NRA agreement with three exceptions. Effective Thursday August 3 the shop hours are 8 A M to 5 P M weekdays except Saturday when open 8 A M to 8 P M. Prices list haircuts at 50 cents and shaves at 25 cents.
