The R-100 the world’s largest airship finished its trans Atlantic flight at St Hubert Airport Montreal after a storm delayed the last leg. The ship left Cardington three days earlier and landed after about 79 hours aloft, with only minor damage repaired later.
Shanghai reports Chinese foreign minister warned that Americans faced danger as Reds advance in the Yangtze valley. Hankow, a key industrial city, fears fall to Communists amid reports of encirclement and barbed wire defenses around the Japanese concession. Kiukiang, Kuling, and Nanchang also appear in updates as Red forces push forward.
Taylor countys 4H camp opens Monday evening with 75 to 89 members camping under tents beside the Cole bank farm. A dining room and kitchen are complete, meals begin Monday, and activities include handicraft classes and swimming. Boone Proudfoot and Miss Myrtle Avil oversee the camp with state instructors Tudelle Wilson and Robert Munchmyer, assisted by Wilson, Cole, Miller, Robinson, and others. Free registration offered to members contributing five dollars toward camp expenses.
Huntington August 1 Van A Bittner Fairmont international representative United States Mine Workers Northern West Virginia assailed James Ellwood Jones for the Republican senatorial nomination. He called Jones a staunch advocate of special privilege and opposed to representative government citing his alleged belief that millionaires deserve political office.
A bake sale will be held Saturday at Empire Meat Market starting at 10:00 AM. Salt rising bread and other breads along with pies and cakes will be offered by the Lend A Hand Circle of the Presbyterian Church, 420 fp-2t.
The consolidation deadline between Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Bethlehem Steel was moved to August 29 as the trial to halt the merger entered its twenty first day in common pleas court. Lawyers for the Eaton interests pressed charges on Bethlehem’s bonus system and the $12.9 million listed as goodwill, alleging fraud and concealment from Youngstown stockholders.
Rome August 1 The minister of public works told Premier Mussolini a steady resumption of normal life following the earthquake. Minister Croudlance delivered his seventh resume on conditions indicating gradual demobilization of relief forces and rehabilitation of stricken towns. The report notes the population remains in extraordinary health despite wiped out sanitation and conveniences.
Arthur Williams Jr of East Providence Rhode Island was chosen by Thomas A Edison to receive the second annual college scholarship from among the brightest boys in the nation. Edison and an advisory committee including Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone selected him for a four year technological and scientific course at any college. Dudley Mylebreest of Hartford was second, Dewolf Schatzel of Findlay fourth, with honorable mention to Gordon K Carter of Charlottesville.
The Pennsylvania railroad and its subsidiary the Pennsylvania Company argued before the Interstate Commerce Commission that their substantial holdings in Lehigh Valley and Wabash stock were purely investment and did not lessen competition. They contended voting powers were not used to control management and urged that the actions align with no anti-competitive intent, disputing the government’s consolidation theory.
In San Francisco on August 1, the supreme court weighed calling Warren K. Billings from his cell to testify at the pardon hearing for the 1916 preparedness day bombing. Estelle Smith, ex dental nurse and former prosecution witness, testified with several surprising disclosures including Billings’ claim he was not the bomber but hired by striking machinists to sabotage the plant.
Protestants challenging the Cheat River license for the West Virginia Power and Transmission Company filed an appeal in Kanawha County Circuit Court. The same day WV Power submitted an amended project application to the Public Service Commission for two river developments costing 23 026 000 on the New River across Summers Mercer and Monroe counties. They attack the 1929 water power act as unconstitutional and accuse the commission of not weighing state wide advantages and disadvantages.
A total of 211 hunting and fishing licenses were issued in the county clerk's office during July, 209 resident permits and two non resident licenses. Six marriages are on record as, compared with 22 for June, the proverbial month of brides.
Two men from Rosemont and nearby water station received six months hard labor sentences plus fines for home brew possession and failure to support their families. John Barrett and Walter Coole were found liable for neglecting wives and three daughters each, with Coole’s actions exposing the family to public sympathy as he was caught living with another woman. The judge and court stepped in with sentences and post judgment aid actions, including shoes for the children. Salvation Army plans to provide further assistance to the Barretts and Coole families beyond county aid.
Detroit police detained Marjorie Mansell Livavoll a noted gangster and radio entertainer in connection with the Buckley murder case. Authorities said she may hold information and questioned her as the investigation focused on the killing found in front of the Buckley house.
In Tiltonville Ohio on August 1 a keg of powder ignited by a broken electric wire sparked a blast at the Bird mine of Warner Kevies company. Twelve miners were critically injured and rushed to Marting Hospital. One worker, Hlvin McLaughlin, 96, remained in critical condition with others expected to recover. Pit boss Seth Williams noted the explosion occurred near entrance No. 8 and suggested the keg powder ignition may have started from an electrical fault.
Washington reports after two days of talks that Dr. Woodcock plans a 26 percent staff enlargement for the Treasury’s Industrial Alcohol division. James M. Doran will also seek an increase to about 2,500, aiming for stricter enforcement. The push is described as a “cry of despair” by Woodcock, with details to follow on page seven. Also notes a noon deadline for Graf Printing Co. and a weekend dance event at Mountain View Camp on Route 250 featuring Heater and Rogers.
