Auditor Won't Honor Any Guarnishee Suggestions
Charleston April 29. Auditor Edgar B. Sims announced he would not honor any garnishee actions against state employees since the legislature failed to pass enabling legislation. A November constitutional amendment made public salaries subject to garnishment, but differences over the enabling bill doomed it. Sims cited an opinion by former Attorney General Governor Holt that enabling legislation was needed. He has received 25 to 30 wage attachment suggestions from justices of the peace, all addressed to him personally, noting he could not answer a summons in Martinsburg while another called him to Williamson.

Logan County Mine Accidents Kill One and Injure Three
In Logan county April 23, a slate fall at the Rita mine of Logan Chilton Coal killed 22 year old John Peter Davis and injured three coworkers. Williamson April 29 A Pike county Kentucky prosecutor held two brothers for action pending investigation into the death of Gibbon Copley 22 found with a broken neck in the Tug river. A physician said the neck was broken before entry and one man described a drinking party on the Kentucky side but said they left Copley and went home alone amid discrepancies in the tale.

Sutton April 29. Sherl Carpenter fisherman philosopher died at his home east of Sutton last night. He was 75. Carpenter known along Elk river banks and among Braxton county residents for homely sayings and fishing trips with state figures. He was a grandson of Solomon Carpenter said to be Braxton county’s first white child.

Prison Break Try Ends in Deaths at Yard
In Moundsville prison four long term inmates attempted to break through gates on a truck. Deputy Warden C. M. Stone said two were killed and two badly wounded. guard Harry Straley was wounded in the hand as about 100 shots were fired. Victims were Ralph Richards Clifford Stewart Roy Altizer and Harry Battle. The escape was halted with guards firing on the truck leaving two dead and others severely injured. The incident ended with the yard quieting under control.
