Federal Judge Harry E. Watkins dismissed all income tax evasion charges against William G. Lias the Wheeling race track and night club owner. He ordered a new grand jury to meet here May 10 to consider the case.
The Grafton City Council authorized an extended levy question on ballots to raise about 13000 annually for three years to help cover a 30000 budget gap. City Attorney McPhail will place the levy on the election ballot while noting the extension cannot exceed 50 percent of the current levy and viewing 1948 rates for various property classes. The deadline and specifics reflect efforts to stabilize finances amid potential liquor tax losses.
A Salonika court convicted Greek newspaperman Gregory Staktopoulos of complicity in the American correspondent George Polk case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Co defendants Adam Mouzeniades and Evangelos Vasvanas were tried in absentia and received lighter sentences.

Delaware state police plan to bring 19 year old George Brennan from Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio to face arraignment for being an accessory after the fact in the Ley slayings. He is the third son of Mrs Inez Brennan and joins Robert Brennan 15 charged with murder. Mrs Brennan 44, a twice married brunette, was a victim in the case.
The British Cruiser London and the Sloop Black Swan steamed for Shanghai after engaging communist shore guns below Nanking on the Yangtze river. About 50 casualties were aboard the two ships, the third and fourth British Navy craft hit in the renewed Chinese civil war, while the Amethyst reported 20 dead and 30 to 40 wounded. Survivors reached Shanghai with more British losses including 16 wounded and 10 dead aboard the destroyer Consort.
