Pottsville Pa April 7 The sympathy walkout of anthracite miners spread across eastern Pennsylvania today idling at least 24,500 workers in 26 collieries. Leaders said the action supported soft coal strikes, with 9,000 idled yesterday and larger outbreaks possible in Panther Vesley Lansford and Toftsville regions as miners denounce John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers.

Two freshmen girls at Grafton Senior High were named winners of the essay contest on What I Can Do to Make a Cleaner Grafton. Carolyn Anderson won five dollars. Nola Snay won two dollars and fifty cents. The contest supported Taylor County Board of Trade's Spring Clean-Up campaign launching May 1. Also, Mickey McFarland resigned as night driver for the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department to join Sterling Fawcett in Morgantown. a temporary driver was hired.

Man Killed In Wreck Near Clay On Highway
Marvel Lanham a 39 resident near Clay was killed and his wife Anna 39 seriously injured when their light car failed to negotiate a curve at the foot of Macel mountain on State Route 4 near Clay. The vehicle tore out three guard rail posts and plunged over a 10 foot embankment. Lanham died on arrival at a Charleston hospital while Mrs Lanham suffered a deep forehead laceration but remained in good condition per attendants.

Traffic Death Toll Reaches 8 For April
West Virginia April traffic fatalities rose to eight with the death of 19 year old Thomas Bradford Poling of Rowlesburg in a U S Route 50 crash in Taylor county. State police report the year’s toll at 82, compared with 91 last year and three in the first six days of April 1947.

Tenants Linked to Fiery Murder in Wisconsin Mansion
Dist Atty Edward Minor says a first degree murder charge will be filed against tenant William Drews 50 for striking aged landlady Mrs. Richard P. Cody 85 and thrusting her body into a blazing furnace. Cody’s charred remains were found in her three story mansion after the fire. Drews allegedly killed the recluse Friday morning and later married Julia Smith about 36, who lived next door with four children. The report notes Drews rented part of two adjoining apartments. Senate Confirms Paul Hoffman to Lead European Recovery
The senate confirmed Paul G. Hoffman to head the European recovery program, following the April enactment of a 5.3 billion dollar aid measure. Picket Motorcade Targets Harrison County Mines
