Yesterday at the J. R. Show farm a well drilled by P. L. Johnson struck a vein of natural gas at 285 feet. The gas burned for a time this forenoon though pressure is light and the hole is mud-filled. If developed, it may provide fuel for lighting and cooking. local excitement grows as gas often hints at oil nearby.
The angel of death took eight year old Ira Barton Sunday night. He leaves a father, a mother, four sisters and three brothers to mourn his early departure. Ira was loved at home and by schoolmates. The body rests in the cemetery east of Gmaettinger as community sympathy goes to the family.
Paulsen of Grachtinger pitched for Cornell freshmen in a 17 to 2 win over the sophomores. The Cornell publicity note says the unorganized freshmen impressed with strong play and will accept further challenge from the seniors. Paulsen hails from Grachtinger, Iowa.
W B Patton and his Peculiar Comedian company present The Deadly Female at Emmetsburg Friday Sept 24. Patton stars as Johnson with a praised performance and a full supporting cast. Elaborate scenery costumes and effects accompany the show, advance seat sales open Thursday Sept 22 with mail reservations available.
Auctioneer Ben F Reeves of this city handled four pure bred Poland China hog sales last week. He cried for C W Creese at Coon Rapids, for T J Petersen at Ringsted, for Tom Boland at Armstrong, and for Henry Hagerman at Grover. Creese topped at 1200 dollars, Petersen at 490, Hagerman sale averaged 128 dollars. Reeves is well known for his work in pure bred hog sales.
With two weeks of warm dry weather the corn crop is an easy winner against Jack Frost. Practically all of the crop is out of danger and farmers in the locality report bumper yields of corn and small grain.
Gene O'Brien, eighty, was badly injured in an auto accident at Estherville on August 7 and remains unconscious at Estherville hospital. He is gradually weakening with no apparent hope for recovery.
E J Lawrence sells his interest in Lawrence Clothing to John Reimer of Estherville. Reimer to take charge October 1. Lawrence and father purchase large Denison store and will invoice stock in Grachtlinger before moving. Reimer rents Alfred Jensen house and will relocate with family. Local merchants regret departure but wish him and new proprietor success.
Excitement swept Ruthven when word spread that two bandits in a Packard might pass through town noon. Sharpshooters waited for a raid but learned the Linn Grove bank had been robbed overnight, yielding $10,000 in bonds and $1,000 in cash. Ruthven men then hunted ducks.
Fritz the Unknown, a Reeves school student, defeated Martin Ressell at Woodman hall on Saturday. Fritz won the first fall in sixteen minutes with a scissors hold and the second in three minutes with the same maneuver. Ressell impressed but lacked the technique to counter. Fritz studies under Mr. Reaves and shows growing mat artistry. curtain match Herman Herke and another Reeves trainee also wrestled, Herke taking the fall in about fifteen minutes. Large crowd, pleased with the program.
Members of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges held a dancing party at Lost Island Monday night. Home musicians provided music and a splendid time was enjoyed by all. At midnight delightful refreshments were served, leaving memories of genuine pleasure for both lodges.
The Grachtinger general stores have begun free delivery to customers, a service expected to be valued by local patrons. The move aims to boost convenience for shoppers and expand the store's reach in the community.
The Pythian Sisters convene on the first and third Tuesdays monthly in Woodman Hall for their meetings and related activities.

F S Sheffield of Lost Island township seeks the Palo Alto county sheriff’s office. He asks neighbors and friends for support in the coming election. He is described as a capable gentleman who would give painstaking attention to the duties of the office during an active campaign.
Duhlin, a West Town resident, purchased the BE.7 Newhall moving outfit at Saturday auction. The household goods on offer drew good prices as part of the sale.
After the September 21 regular meeting of the Pythian Sisters a casual reception honored Mrs Anne Molison who plans to move to Spencer Iowa. She received a Pythian pin and spoke of sisterhood affection. Members enjoyed refreshments and a fruit course by Mr Sheffield.
Henry Ford announced a $142 price drop on all Ford car models bringing prices near prewar levels. At announcement time Ford held 146,000 unfilled orders as materials held in parts depots slowed production. Buyers show little anger toward the price reduction.
Herman Brekke, a young schoolboy, remains in serious condition after last week's auto crash. He was brought home from Estherville hospital Monday but grew worse today. his hearing was affected and he has become drowsy again after being unconscious for several days.
Clayton, Archie, and Agnes Breffle were married in Estherville on Tuesday and depart for Omaha for their honeymoon. The bride is well known locally with many friends, and the Times extends hearty congratulations. The P T A will host a reception for parents at J A Spies home Monday evening September 27, inviting all school patrons.
Ringsted and Graettinger will play a charity baseball game in Graettinger Friday under school ground trustees. Receipts go to the interest fund. Graettinger players donate their services. Businesses close at 2:30 and school dismisses. Citizens urged to attend for a good, fast game.
On Wednesday morning September 16 at the Norwegian Lutheran church Oliver T. Osher of Stanmore Alberta Canada and Miss Anna Jensen of Wallingford were married. Rev S A Berge performed the ceremony with Mr and Mrs Edward Osher as attendants. Mr Osher, formerly an Emmet county resident, has been farming in Canada and will return there with his bride.
P. Q. Bjorenson vice president of the First National Bank of Milford resigns to enroll at the University of Iowa this fall. He will study liberal arts with focus on banking and commerce and bank advertising. Born Spirit Lake high school graduate, he is 33 and has served eighteen years at the Milford bank in various roles.
Fritz the Unknown, a student of Ben Reeves, defeated Jud Thompson in two falls in forty minutes at the Ruthven fair. Fritz showed strong progress and skill in the match.
