Graettinger hosts a bustling Labor Day with snowmobile races softball tournaments grain shows and queen crownings. Sunday and Monday brought varied events despite weather threats as residents enjoyed a packed schedule within a few hours each day.
Elvin Bringle of Estherville born at 1810 North 6th Street made a career from grocery man to tomato grower. He spent 18 years with Dan Howard, then in 1944 bought the Lyman store and ran it for 27 years building a solid local business before turning to hobby farming for big tomatoes.
Published in Graettinger weekly, Al proved he could compete with larger businesses. Now growing about 400 tomato plants, he stakes and ties vines, fights sunscald, drought, and pests with early fungicides and gypsum. He enjoys open air, neighbors, birds, and flowers during retirement.
Several letters thank the Graettinger Times staff for reminders and express appreciation for the paper. Readers Susie Egel Orville Rustad Joseph H Jackson and O M Refsell request renewals and advances with accompanying checks for annual or two year subscriptions.
