Monument to Shiloh monument dismantled by cyclone
Captain H B Soper of Emmetsburg recounts a cyclone that toppled the Shiloh battlefield monument built for 25000 dollars in Barre granite with a concrete core and copper fittings. The project was supervised by the Shiloh National Park engineer. Soper notes the sturdy design resisted wind but the cyclone carried a granite shaft over a bluff and dropped it into a hollow, leaving some monuments standing elsewhere in Iowa.
