A Chicago report recalls Lincoln in his rail road counsel role opposing a Mississippi River bridge during the 1860s. Jefferson Davis, then secretary of war, sought injunctions blocking the project, a suit that sparked court fights, a public nuisance ruling, and a landmark reversal by the U.S. Supreme Court. The old pier near Rock Island was rediscovered by Charles Davis and restored as a memorial. The Rock Island celebration will include a Joliet ceremony October 10 honoring the line’s founder engineer Samuel B. Need.
